As we say in the U.K. it sounds as if he isn't "short of a bob or two" Bob or correct name, shilling= former U.K. coin in our pre-decimal coinage days. Worth 5p or about five and one third cents at our terrible £:$ exchange rate. Buddy, can you spare a dime?

Just think of all those wonderful cameras and lenses to flood the market after he passes.
That's what most often happens to camera collections - surviving family members put them up for sale to cover moving and funeral costs.

won't have an impact because prices for Nikon film gear have already bottomed out at near-zero.

A cupla weeks ago a friend gave me an N-70. Lovely thing, more bells and whistles than Carter has pills, but they go on KEH for $5 to $15 -- the $5 one is "sticky" but otherwise just fine.

Which makes me wonder about that $150K valuation. If this guy wants to do his heirs a favor, he'll arrange for a future home for the collection, or its disposal, before he dies.

Having many cameras is like having many records of classical and other types of music rather than having just one record in your house.

Not really. If you read the article, the qualifiers are:

They hold onto a large number of items that most people would consider useless or worthless

Their home is cluttered to the point where many parts are inaccessible and can no longer be used for intended purposes.

Their clutter and mess is at a point where it can cause illness, distress, and impairment.

Well he certainly fits that one...most people think film gear is both useless and worthless these days, debatably he doesn't fit the other two criteria but only because he's supremely lucky enough to have somewhere the size of a small country to store his collection.

That is why so many beautiful Leicas that look almost new keep appearing on eBay or at genuine auction companies. Guys (it is always guys) bought special edition or even normal Leica bodies and lenses and put them in their safe deposit boxes. Then they died and their poor widows need to sell the stuff. Many of the prices are not too out of line, so if you want a classic Leica from the Wetzlar era (hand assembly and adjustment, etc., etc.), look for the auctions. The bodies will need cleaning, but are essentially new old stock.

My collection is not that large- maybe 65 or so Nikon Bodies and ~100 Nikon lenses. Add in the other cameras and lenses, like 90 lenses in Leica RF mount, about the same in other mounts, it adds up.
The fun of collecting is to find something cheap, even if it is in need of some repair- then make it work again. Doesn't matter how many cameras you have, if you walk into an Antique Shop and see a Nikon M with lens for $30, buy it. Or a pair of Barnack Leicas with lenses for $15 each, buy them. I did... My goal is to know how the cameras work, how the lenses were designed, and to leave them in better condition than I found them.
