The computer deserves it's due (I've made a 35 year career in IT), but there is something very satisfying about fine mechanical Swiss watches, Leica (film) cameras, blued carbon steel and wood firearms, and "real" martinis (gin and vermouth)! Vodka please. Gin is too digital. Why? Think of it, where does vodka come from? Russia. Russians don't use digital. They use Soviet-era metal "tanks" which, when working, create adequate images with their interesting lenses.

No, son. Real Martinis are made with Gin. Stirred, not shaken.

Rather than putting it in a shaker and poisoning the drink with ice, store the Gin in the freezer. That way the Martini stays cold much longer and the Martini is not weaken the ice or melted ice.

See, now you have learned one of the great truths of the world, grasshopper.

OK, I didn't want to do this, but you guys have forced the issue:

Real Martini recipe is as follows:
1 part Noilly Prat dry vermouth
4 parts Tanqueray
1 dash orange bitters
Ice
Stir and pour into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon twist.

Put on a little Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, or Chet Baker.
Sip and enjoy...

PS... Winston Churchill on vodka:
"Lovely stuff -- if you've run out of brandy, port, champagn, gin, and Scotch!"

Recently I have given up the intake of alcohol ... but before I did, I made a breakthrough discovery, in line with "The Most Common element of Beauty is Simplicity":

Two ounces of Vodka (the "better", the better)
One splash/ one half ounce of Yukon Jack
Ice (optional)
Shake, stir - jump up and down with a vial between your teeth - or not...

I've named it a "Jackhammer", for one of its ingredients, and its effect.

This is a very good post, it just shows how the sheep are taken in. But is this aimed at the pro end only or is any one evolved in this. I do think there are a lot of us on the APUG who has a digi and are one of many to follow. But why did it take so long to be on line, 2007 a long time to think about this.

I have noticed that if a post goes out on line there will be a following until it snow balls and then the masses start to follow again. Just the way digi got a lot of us, me too. You start to talk about a certain camera and just sit back and see, there will be people who will go looking for one.

But to the OP and the post, we have lost a lot of creative aspects to the picture taken because of digi, but as long there are us who still use film for what we know are it's quality's it will still go on.

Hello Steve, i do have a digi, wife's idea. Do not like to use it and it sits on the side 99% of the time. I am in the process of a trade in for some Bronnie lenses. Or a sale not to sure as of yet.

How about a nice lager, like Sleemans Original Draft, Moosehead, Becks or any of the Adirondack products (when I can get them...).

Those are ok, but the bitter after taste from the hops, kills the enjoyment for me after a while. AND I agree with Andy on his posting!

Great article on FILM. This is the same story I have been telling people since the start of the d******* age. If our ancestors spend countless lifetimes perfecting a product such as analog photography would we be ungrateful by throwing it all away for something that is still not proven it self by a thing called age & experience?

And by the way Canadians make the BEST beer in the world ;p

Great artical, thanks for the post. While most pros can agree with the artical, the majority of sales for digital cameras I think are to Joe and Jane Sixpack. These are the folks who have enough disposable income (boy don't I wish I did too) to upgrade their camera every year or two along with their ipods and such. There's no doubt about it, we here in the US love our technology and our gadgets. I cannot tell you how many times I've had people come up to me while I was out shooting my F2 or my RZ67 and express surprise that film is still being made. Furthermore, while I agree that film images offer so much more quality then digital images, most people simply don't care. They just want a camera to shoot on vacations, birthday parties, soccer games etc. Many people I've spoken to over the years no longer even make prints, they just upload them to their computer and look at them there. How sad.

I hate to sound pessimistic, but I sometimes wonder how our culture has shifted so much to arrive at a point where mediocrity is considered good enough. Is there just not a demand for excellence anymore? I don't mean to get off topic here but it just seems that the older I get (I'm 39 now) the bar on quality continues to drop on just about everything from pop culture to the products one finds on the shelves, yet the prices for these items continues to rise.

Now then that's off my chest, this is a good time for the old reminder that cameras do not take pictures, people do. A good photographer will take good pictures regardless of the camera he/she is using.
