The Silver Conference Should be Starting about now....

Next we heard from George Dewolf. For those who think he is all about digital I must say loudly, “YOU”RE WRONG!” .

That sounds a bit surprising considering that his interest during the past few years has emphasized ink jet printing and digital photography.

To quote a line from his bio posted on his web site, "He teaches The Digital Fine Print Workshop and Contemplative Photogaphy throughout the United States."; this seems to contradict that he is interested in film based photography.

It would be nice someday to have something in the southeast where we don't have to spend a arm and a leg for a flight to these things. Or plan a two week drive to get there and back. If isn't in NY,it is in Az, Cal, NM. How about Al, Georgia,Fl.

I'm with you on that Mike. Seems like the SE US doesn't even exist.

What George lectured on was not about silver or digital. It was seeing light. How we should all take the time and study the masters. Not AA,EW, or the rest the Master photographers but the Masters of painting, Rembrant, Monet, Sargent, Cassett, and all the other painters in history. George showed the attendees of the Conference how light was used and studied by those who worked it before photography was around.
It was very informative. I thought that George did a neet presentation. The one thing that Ilford and Calumet stressed on those who attended was don't get drawn into the battle of them verses us. Digital v. Analog. Both have their plus and minus. Both have to do with visual images and that was what George was lecturing on. Both use light.

I sat with George and talked for quite a while. Digital pays the mortgage for him, and guess what....he prefers film. Now how many here on apug make a liviong doing digital, but for what they really like and their self work, use analog?

The discount rate at the Hilton in Pasadena was something like $110 plus just $8 /day for parking. My rental car from LAX cost less than $100 for the entire time. The conference was just $300 for 3 full (too full) days with world class presenters. The Art Center in Pasadena is a prestigious art school in a beautiful setting with great modern architecture.

As conferences go, it could not have been a better bargain (unless it had time slots for dinner).

Don't forget the $400-500 for a flight and $250 for a car rental or
the $30- $40,000 I would be not be making if I drove over 2 weeks.

We just got confirmation from Ilford, that three of our clients were in the top 18 winners.

They are asking for tiffs of each image so they can post the winners.
seems a little backwards to me but what the hell I am happy that my friends were accepted.

thats before overhead, If I took that home I would have been at the conference and every conference from now on.

Why pound on the conference organizers because the conference was what they said it was going to be - about black & white?

They called it a "Silver Conference" not a black & white conference. Silver is colour too, the last I checked, which is my point. Anyway, I'm actually not bashing the conference. I fully support it in fact. Just making a point.
