I just received a copy of Sally Mann’s A Thousand Crossings that I found brand new at the Peabody Essex Museum bookshop for $85, which is the book’s MSRP. Most used copies I’ve seen are selling for $120-$150. I’ve only had time for a cursory flip through but it looks very well done. A big book at over 300 pages.

I also recently picked up a copy of Yamamoto Masao’s Small Things in Silence. Really beautiful work in a nicely produced package.

I was in Providence, RI last week and picked up Bernd and Hilla Becher: Life and Work and Irving Penn's Small Trades. Both books are out of print and can be hard to find, much less at a reasonable price. Also, nice to shop at brick and mortar bookstores.

Waiting impatiently for Canada Post to drop on my doorstep the two books I bought online last week, Todd Hido's Intimate Distance and Richard Misrach's Crimes and Splendors.

Took me these two to realize how much subscribing to newsletters from book stores that specializes in photo books is not good for my bank account.

Been there! On that subject, did you see there's a 30% off sale on all books at Thames and Hudson? 🙃

Seriously though, this was tempting. But I have a Mark Ruwedel book waiting for my next paycheck in an online shopping cart, so it makes passing this a bit easier.

Twin Palms is having a 50% off two books sale

No it's not.

(I'm in denial...)

(And thankfully I already have the fantastic Winogrand Color book...)

Taschen just published a 550-page Ralph Gibson retrospective.

Ralph Gibson: Photographs 1960-2024.

I'm sure that's a beautiful book.
I have noticed that the same photos show up again & again in my collection of Gibson books...
so I doubt I need to buy yet another "Greatest Hits" book.
Cynical, maybe...but I'm open to being proven wrong.

I plan on getting the Gibson book even though I have quite a few already. Taschen published Deus Ex Machina back in the day and that is probably my favorite book. I don't have any of his newer non film work. There was another big Gibson book that was published recently. I should probably see what the difference is. Or maybe I'll just try to locate the newer work.

I took a look at the Twin Palms sale. I'd love to get Ellen von Unworth's Revenge. Been meaning to get that one for years, but I can't find anything else I am interested in.. Hate it when that happens. Maybe I'll get the Winogrand Color, though I am not a fan of Winogrand. Anyone have any suggestions?

I think Mike Brodie is a really interesting photographer. If I hadn't spent so much on books recently, both of his—especially A Period of Juvenile Prosperity, but also Failing—would be in my shopping cart.

I am a Winogrand fan, but It's taken a while for that book to grow on me. I can't say it's my favorite work of his, but there are definitely some gems in there and I've begun to appreciate it more over time. I think it's worth adding to your collection, especially at 50% off.

I've bought several new books lately so I'm thankful that I don't see 2+ books from Twin Palms that are must-haves for me 🙂

Re: Winogrand, if you can find a copy of the SFMOMA retrospective book by Sarah Greenough and Leo Rubinfien at a reasonable price then grab it. I was lucky enough to stumble on a new copy in the SFMOMA bookstore a few years back and almost cheaped out and didn't buy it. It's now selling used for considerably more.

I have Fragments of the Real World, the 1988 MoMA retrospective book edited by Szarkowski. Quite good also.

Immensely enjoying going through Crimes and Splendors: The Desert Cantos of Richard Misrach. The two essays—including one by Rebecca Solnit—are brilliant, and the photos are absolutely stunning.

It's a signed edition I got at a price a bit higher than what I usually like to pay (or can affor to) for a photo book, but it was worth it.
