For fans of Robert Adams, Steidl has just released the reissue of 'Los Angeles Spring'. It's one I've been waiting on for quite some time, although I'm a bit disappointed to find out that they want € 150 for it! Quite a hefty price for an unsigned, new release containing 56 images.
A few more reasonably-priced Steidl releases are scheduled to arrive in my mailbox tomorrow - Lee Friedlander's 'Pickup' and 'Workers - The Human Clay' and the reissue of Mary Ellen Mark's 'Ward 81'
Looks like I've hit my book limit for July earlier than expected. Thank goodness at least the shipping is free!
But it's a shame that they printed Mary Ellen Mark's pictures across the gutter like that. That's often the key factor if/when I decide not to buy a book. I hate, hate, hate when publishers do that. The misfortune is compounded by the fact that so many of her pictures are quite powerful.
Unfortunately, it's become all too common. One of my favorite Friedlander photos was obliterated by the gutter in the recently released 'Framed'. My guess is that the publishers/designers are following the 'bigger is better' trend when printing photos and they use a two-page spread to maximize image size. It hasn't stopped me from buying a book yet, but I do really dislike the practice.
It's very surprising that Fraenkel would do that--a pity.
I happen to contribute a column dedicated to reviewing photobooks for the magazine Ciel Variable.
Here are some recent contributions:
Zone Eleven, Mike Mandel
Zone Eleven, by Mike Mandel, photographs by Ansel Adams – Michel Hardy-Vallée – Ciel variable Magazine
The Photobook – By Michel Hardy-Vallée. Fairy tales and novels of chivalry have the power to normalize royalty – a tenacious institution, despite revolutions and regicides. In photography, Ansel Adams is, in a way, royalty...cielvariable.ca

The Photobook – By Michel Hardy-Vallée. So, let’s review: Valerie Solanas wrote the radical feminist SCUM Manifesto (SCUM stands for Society for Cutting Up Men) in 1967 to protest how men were leading the world (to failure) and then shot Andy Warhol in 1968 because he was controlling her life...cielvariable.ca

Some recent acquisitions. Yeah, I may have a problem
OK, I've had The Decisive Moment and Western Landscapes for a few years, I just didn't move them before snapping the photo. The rest are fairly new.

You have too much empty shelf space.
Some of those zines look quite interesting. I've never heard of this publisher before, kind of reminds me of Cafe Royal Books.I have the same problem. And I need to get Workers...
Should be receiving three new ones in the coming days. Two are zines I ordered from Another Place Press, a small publisher I really like.

That looks terrific, thanks for making me aware of it.The third is an absolute gem called Love from Manenberg from photographer Sarah Stacke
I'd somehow never heard of Robert Stivers. I'll be acquiring a couple of his books too.
Here's a bunch of YouTube channel links that have had a hand in keeping my book budget in the red. If you've got any others, please share them as well.
Don't.
Ever.
Do this.
Again.
Right now, it's Sasha Wolf's podcast, Photowork, that is (literally) ruining my life. Had a four hour drive today, listened to her interviews with Todd Hido, Mark Steinmetz and Alessandra Sanguinetti, one thing led to another, and yada yada yada, I will be poorer this week than I was last week...
