The Petzval is now available on lomography shop

So we from APUG will wait for couple of months - soon they will be cheaper and rich guys will sell them on ebay after they play a little. When I find one for 200 euros - I will buy it .

I've got the brass Nikon edition. It works great and makes lovely photos.

I don't care for the aperture discs system, as I've nearly lost my disks many times just in the short time I've had the lens. It's also very very heavy. Don't count on a casual walk and snapping a few photos when using this lens, you will be carrying a beast.

I think it was worth the money and I look forward to using it for many years to come.

It seems that you are right according to online sources it is 4/3 construction and not the classic Petzval construction it still seems like a nice lens though

Why not use the original lens configuration, these decisions keep me away from otherwise useful projects like this

This whole Petzval thing is just stupid if used correctly for the right sized plates etc the petzval produces superb Images without a big effect other than the swirly Bokeh if used wide open with a busy Background. And any triplet can do swirly bokeh if used wide open with a busy Background.

I am all for this lens but the whole Petzval thing is marketing B.S.

Yes, lomography is pretty pathetic. And no, I don't want to hear the rationalization that they "keep film alive" - they keep bull$hit alive is what they do. When the Petzval type is used as it was intended, there are no nauseating swirls; it was intended to be used as a large aperture portrait lens.

I bought and like a lot of lomography products but the way they advertise the Petzval borders on deliberate consumer deception. They talk about the 1840 etc... and nowhere do they mention that it is not a Petzval lens at all. If they would sell it as in the Spirit of the .... lens than it would be okay . On the german site they even advertise it as Petzval Portrait lens and use this wording "Das Lomography Petzval Objektiv ist eine beeindruckende Neuauflage einer der ersten und großartigsten Objektive aller Zeiten" the english Version is worded more carefully The Lomography x Zenit Petzval Lens is a stunning reinvention of one of the first and greatest lenses of all time. Neuauflage= reissue and not reinvention.

Again I am all for this lens and the look it gives but I won't buy it as I have plenty of real Petzval's at home. I wish them plenty of success or at least I wish Zenit plenty of success. They should just tone down their marketing.

Todays capitalism is no longer married with democracy and honesty. Those days are long gone.

Or could it be that a Petzval construction that includes the abberated part in a 35mm frame lacks enough back focal distance for 35mm SLR's ?


But the respective Petzval design by our fellow member Denys works with medium-format SLR's.
Thus a respective design should work with 35mm SLR's.
