Seems like you ought to be buying new, with the twenty questions and all. Do you really think you're going to be happy buying used when it arrives and doesn't meet your expectations? Will cost you more shipping and re-selling on ebay than buying new...I bought new Gitzon in the last year, and it's a hit financially, but just cut back on the coffee or beer.

You are correct, it is NOT adjustable.

I know a lot of people will think this way off, but currently I'm using a R1 pan head for 5x4 - a non too light Walker Titan at that. I've had an engineer mate of mine mill off the rather hollow camera plate, insert a screwed stud, and then fixed on a Manfrotto quick release adaptor - it's a nice combination. The R1 head is a nifty little thing that locks up very rigid, although as I said using it with anything above 35mm would be a no-no for most folks.

I really can not afford the new stuff people. I am not buying of ebay, because of shipping , but in the local online secondhand markets, so I can pick it up. The cremaillere I posted earlier has a asking price of 35 dollar, including a head...... I think I can take that change
I will simply check and see when a studex perfromence cremaillere 4 comes along and then I'll strike.
I bought the manfriotto/bogen 055b new by the way.
Maybe I will buy the head new by the way.

I never worked with a ballhead, but for pentax 6x7 and a 4x5 a pan tilit head seems nicer.
I do want a quick release. Can you buy that seperate and then install? If so, what types are good?
I have seen the nice pan tilts heads from gitzo's current line, and I like those a lot. For now the older no.4 head with some sort of quick release have to do.

I wanted to make use of this thread to ask one more thing:

I need a quick release plate, and to my suprise I saw they are not to expensive, even the gitzo ones. What one would you reccomend? I have a 6x7 pentax and will add a 4x5 momorail or tlc in the future.

I picked up the cremailere and it is quitte the same as the bogen 144b I have.
Size wise and weight wise. i guess it was a reporter 3 series or something.
It will leave because It has no performence legs, but If anyone was wondering: the reporter 3 + cremaillere three is the same size/weight as the bogen 144b.

I looked at the local store and found they have a universal manfrotto quick release for 30 dollar new. I guess I'll buy that in case a new tripod comes along that does not features a QR. If anyone feels the need to stop me, because I am making a terrible mistake, feel free,

As I said earlier in the thread, your Manfrotto/Bogen legs should be more than adequate for a 5x4 field camera – it's rated for 6kg whereas my MPP MkVII with 150mm Sironar lens weighs about 3.5kg – plenty to spare.

Don't waste your money! Too late, you already have... :-(

I paid 35 dollar for the gitzo + head & monorail holder. So that doesn't seem like wasting money...
I dont think the bogen is adequate...
will go for something heavier eventually. At least now I know what I want.

A medium size Gitzo even without the legs spreading for $35 sounds like an excellent deal. If it is a 300 series, you may find it works quite well for 4X5. I recall the one you were looking at had the tall R3 head, but I don't know if that is the head you bought. I never could get used to that design head, but I was used to the low-profile 5 head. I suspect if you use the tall head for awhile you will like it. Anyway, I'm very pleased you did get a Gitzo. One of the best purchases I've made is my 500 series 25 years ago.
