The best slr camera that Nikon made feature-wise is the Nikon F100. Lighter than the F4 and F5 and used AA batteries.

Had the F, sold it and got an FM, sold it and got an FE2, then an F3. Now I have an F4. So far, the F3 is my favorite.

Had an F5, but sold it as it was too bulky. It handled well with a 70-200 attached, but that combo is not what I like to take with me for a walk.

Got an F6 instead and love it with a Voigtlaender 58mm/1.4. Very compact and powerful. MF on the F6 works great.

The F5 and F6 are too heavy and bulky for me. That is why I recommend the F100. Some people have problems with the F100 plastic back. If that is a problem choose a metal camera instead.

The F6 is about 120g more in weight compared to the F100, the F5 is about 500g more and much larger due to the integrated vertical grip.

The F6 feels a lot more solid than the F100 and comes with useful functions (more focus areas, EXIF imprint, etc. ).
