The Ilford 120 film issue - which films have people seen affected?

Some suggest that you check the batch numbers. There is a thread with them, but I do not know how good it is.

Just a quick question. I used to use plenty of Delta 100 in 120, but that hasn't been the case lately, but of that film I don't remember having any mottling problems. Has anyone encountered issues with Ilford's Delta 100 120? Or Delta 400 120 for that matter?

I reported the issue to Ilford and they confirmed that my roll was faulty. They have offered to replace all of my affected rolls. Luckily, most of the rolls in my fridge have the new batch number format starting with 'FF' and Ilford said that these should be much less susceptible to this problem.

While I'm not thrilled that I had a roll of pictures ruined by this issue, I have to commend Ilford's customer service team for quickly responding to my report. They have notified me that they have shipped some replacement rolls of FP4+ to compensate me for my faulty roll.

Recently returned from a trip to USA. Bought 5 rolls of Acros ii there to avoid scanners in Uk airport. Just deved them and there are definite mottling issues with all of them. Luckily I was mainly shooting digital but how can you visit Yosemite and not shoot a roll or two of film. Very deflated!

To bad to hear about this again. I have also experienced it with Acros II in 120-format and I wrote about it in this thread ( post 108 ) . Ilford seems to have admitted the problem and tried to handle it in a good way. Unfortunately there is only silence from Fuji.

Fortunatelly I don't have problems with mottling on Acros, but I do miss edge marking on some rolls I bought.

I have not read the thread right through but there seems to a definite trend to those who have passed through airports and scanners, I wonder if there is a link especially with film that is unexposed. I say this because in all the years I have been using film (well over 50) I have never had a problem with mottling. There again I have only passed through an airport scanner twice and that was when I was using a Nikon D300 which would not have been affected.

That's why we need to see a photo... It's quite obvious what airport x-ray damage looks like, as well as mottling, and backing paper issue...

I'll see if i can scan a contact sheet while I'm at work tomorrow. But I haven't been near an airport for a few years.
It's a soft ( diffuse ) mottling/streaking that's most visible in the skies.

Can you see if the mottling is on unexposed leaders? If you can see it there, then it is most likely a film base issue. I had an issue with HP5 sheet film, where there was streaking on the film base. I put this down to me, pre-washing the film... not recommended by Ilford...

The problem with Acros II in 120-format is similar to what showed up on Ilford films. On the film boxes for Acros II it says "Made in UK" and the backing paper on Acros II is almost identical to what was on the Ilford films. I suspect that Ilford/Harman in some way is involved in the Acros II production. Ilford seems to have made efforts to correct the errors on their own films, but nothing has been heard from Fuji. I enclose a link to the statement that Ilford made last year about the problems.

In March 2020 we issued a statement in relation to instances of spots / mottle affecting a small percentage of 120 roll film negatives.

The mottling is also visible in the unexposed film before frame 1 and in-between frames, but is faint and hard to photograph. It's like a modulation of the base fog.

Storage from time it's produced till used. Storage of backing paper, handling, all of the above. The distribution channels are not as good as the old days. Etc etc etc.....

Mottling is a paper issue while X-Ray damage is typically wavy in lines among other artifacts, but not mottling.

Have patience. The replacement rolls that I received from Ilford/Harman last year have worked fine, and also Kodak seems to have a reliable backing paper on their 120-size films nowadays .
