The Great Nikon N75 vs N80 Shootout!

To further the discussion of high-end AF-D lenses (that are great for these cameras), the 18mm and 16mm AF-D have metal bodies.
I don't have either of these but they are on my list of things to get since I like wide angle lenses.
I think some people responding in this thread have these.

How’s the focus speed between the two?
Anyhow, IMHO not even a competition. N80 is so obviously much better.

They do not work without any battery. I have a F80 (same as the N80) and look upon it as a poor man's F100. I take that in preference to any other when I am riding my motorcycle because it is so light compared to a F100 or more markedly my F4. There is not a lot that the F80 cannot do that the the f100 or F4 can. Should I happen to drop it when I am riding my bike it is not such a financial loss as the other two.

I have the U2 which is the Japan version of the N75. I think the AF is pretty fast. Tiny camera.

I think focus speed on both is the same. The both do have the same focus chip. I have all three in front of me N55, N75, N80 and F100. The F100 is clearly faster but the other three are identical from what I can tell.

For me the small size and light weight of the N75/N55 come in very handy at times.

I was recently traveling with the N55 which is lighter than both at only 350g.

I now have two N80s, but used to have the N75. For me the N80 is a better camera because it is more versatile etc, but while I think the N80 is small, the N75 is tiny in comparison! If you want the lightest get up - the N75.

For me the main difference between the two is with the N80 I don't use it and think "if only it had.." it's got everything I need. But with the N75 I do think that.

I hope everyone has the PDF manuals for the cameras. There are a lot of little details in those manuals. I'm still discovering stuff, like I missed in the first chart that N80 has a faster drive motor; 2.5fps vs 1.5 fps.

Kind of in response to the "is stuff to inexpensive" thread, I had the N80 on my car seat when I went to the store the other day. I figured it was only $10 (not counting the latch and ebay fees) so no biggie if it gets stolen. But then I realized its real VALUE TO ME was much greater than $10. I'd be very upset to have a broken window and then try to find another working N80 and lens and strap etc.

So, yes monetary inexpensive but to me; valuable! it is a $360 camera to me.

There is a great comparison (maybe better than this thread) of the N55, N75, N80, F100, F5 and F6 in the B&H 35mm catalog that has been archived in the link below. Seem like just yesterday I got that in the mail. Back then the answer to "Which Camera To Buy" was easy based on pricing..."How Much Do You Want To Spend?"

N55: $200 with 28-80G Lens ($90)

I own 2 AFD Lenses. The 20/35 and the 35/70 both with a constant F2.8 constant aperture and they are anything but cheap and tacky. They are also both very heavy! but would not swap them for anything else in the AF range

My 60 2.8 D seemed to focus quicker than my 60 2.8 G. The 50 1.4 D seems to focus as quick as the 50 1.8G. In practical use I don't notice any difference. The Sigma Art lenses focus a bit quicker, but again, in actual use taking pics it makes no difference unless perhaps you are photographing fast moving sports action.
All focus way way quicker than I could manually!

What is more important is, is the focus accurate and reliable? And that is a yes.

Exactly! My N80s may have cost $20 each, but they perform at a much higher level and so are worth so much more to me as a photographic tool.

All three (F55/F75/F80) seem to have the same speed motor. There is an obvious step up in speed with F100. The F100 and F6 actually both seem about the same, just the F6 is quieter. This is just listening to the motor and seeing how fast if focuses from close to far with the camera's built in motors.

Not really, just hire someone to come along with you to carry it until you need it.

No it is smaller and lighter than the F100, F5 and F6, even much less than an RB67

Most would call the N80 a 'small' camera but the N75 is even smaller, about the size of an APS camera.

I used my U2 with 50mm f1.8D at a track meet my son ( in HS ) was attending. The AF kept up with the runners as they approached me. I was convinced then the AF was “fast enough” for me.

Pleasing to see the F55 added to the mix here. I have that camera and would you believe, downgraded from the F80 on purpose. I loved the grid lines in the F80, that was a brilliant feature, but I think I prefer the F55 for its small size and light weight. I don't think I ever noticed difference in focus speed between the F55 and the F80, I will say, my F5 focuses much faster than my F55, though.
