Has anybody got this book? It seems that Bruce is well respected (plus I like his abstract work) and wondered if the book was worthwhile.

I would appreciate your comments before I purchase

If I only had two books on photography this would be one of them. The other is Les McLean's book. BTW, I have both.

I had emailed Bruce a while back about his book to get a copy of it, but he said he had a new edition coming out. Just checked his website and the new one's ready! It adds a new chapter to the old books and is available directly from Bruce. More info on his website:

I plan on ordering my copy soon.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Seems its one of those books. And with three glowing references I think I will order a copy.

Thanks

Phil

I have the first edition and it's one of the best books I have in a collection of 100's of photographic books. Buy it.

Yup, I've got it too and it's been the single best book on photography I've ever owned. Not only is there abundant information on procedure, but also marvelous expositions on aesthetic considerations as well. I'll probably also buy the latest incarnation when I can afford yet another book.

By the way, been messaging Bruce and I'm sure he wouldn't mind me passing on a comment he's made about the new book:

"Now, let me explain something about the newest edition. There are no photogaphic illustrations. It turned out that including illustrations at the quality I wanted would have been grossly expensive. I believe that the text carries the information very adequately. So in the interests of keep costs low and affordable, we abandoned the pictures. But I think that little, if anythng, is lost in basic information or understanding."

For those who have the first edition, is the images something you would miss? Just starting to wonder if I should change my order to the 1st edition. regards John.

Bruce's images are always worth seeing but the most important part of this book are the words, he writes with passion and a great knowledge of photography. Be a devil and buy both, or better still try to find a copy of Bruce's coffee table book "Visual Symphony" it's not cheap but it is quite magnificent. I've had it since it was first published in the 80's and still look at it regularly and gain inspiration from it.

Slit Canyons DVD from Lenswork

Just received the Lenswork interview of Bruce Barnbaum talking about his Slit Canyons photographs. Great images & very good interview. Makes a very good companion to the newer, image-less version of The Art of Photography.
