Does this mean that we must be fanatically devoted to the Pope? I don't think that's going to work for me. Can I be fanatically devoted to Henry Wessel instead? :D

As long as you have a nice red uniform, you will be left in peace.

Does the new Council expect to utilize the Star Chamber for the upcoming inquisitions?

well my vote is to utilize items such as the iron maiden, garotte, and the heretics fork.... the milder of the instruments

I'll also add to Scott's comment that we're here to help the moderation team rather than supplement them. It's the "many eyes" approach. In the end, the big decisions are implemented by the executive branch, i.e. Sean & the mods.

This is the issue. The problems that APUG has are nuanced, generally not requiring banishment or the inquisition. It is rare when we have multiple long flaming threads. The days of cliques and packs of marauders appears to be over -- and it was never that bad.

What the council will (probably) do is act as a steering committee and an advisory board. Their mere presence in a thread may be enough to keep people on an even keel. Where there are problems with a member or members they will help define a course of action.

The only thing I can't help noticing and am not thrilled about is the gender balance - 2 women and 14 men....

I wouldn't worry about that aspect of it, Cate. You did take notice of which two women they are, of course - I'm hoping the men aren't feeling outnumbered, frankly.

Sean, I've long wondered how you've managed so well with such a small team. I've no doubt that this move was a long time in the making, and can't help but think it's going to prove invaluable for the site.

Congrats to the council members, one and all!

See what I mean, Cate

Yes absolutely, and I should add my support goes for sure to ALL the members  Whatever gender they are  They have two excellent members to learn from :D And it was only the ratio I was thinking about, certainly not the choices, which are all great
Seriously... as I said in my first post, this is an excellent idea - a pleasant environment for all makes all the difference to visiting a site, and continuing to visit. And thanks in advance for the huge amount of time and commitment I appreciate is involved from all concerned.

I do think that the two who will be representing the female contingent here on APUG will do a fine job. Hell, BWGirl is outspoken enough for all of us! :D

This brings up some other important concerns. Who among the council is left handed and who is right handed? More importantly, who is right eye dominant and who is left eye dominant? What are the members' ethnic and religious backgrounds and political leanings? What about the split between color and B&W materials? Any brand loyalties? How come no one on the council is from Wyoming!? Who's going to speak for MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!?!?

 :D  :D  :D

Bruce

PS - Looking forward to you folks doing a fine job!

Is this an accurate reflection of female:male membership? What is the ratio?

Slightly off topic but pertinent to our future what is the membership in say each 10 year age group and are we picking up younger members or slowly ageing.

If 80% of us is already, say, 50+ then if Sean is say mid 30's he's better look for alternative employment and nominate the last( youngest) one to turn off the lights.

pentaxuser - who's just completed his Positive Thinking course.

Now, now boys, it was just a point made in good heart
No harm bearing these things in mind, & I'm certainly not suggesting any changes, so don't get excited

I never was a Big Sister, maybe I should have been :D
edit: posted before Pentaxuser - actually I was wondering about the membership ratio thing but I couldn't work out either if it fitted or if it mattered so I gave up

Sorry Cate, perhaps that came across a bit rougher than intended.

Well, being the right-handed white heterosexual male I am, perhaps the only way I can argue to being a minority is that my native language is not English? Will you still like me?

An excellent selection, Sean! I thoroughly approve!

(...and I shall, of course, deny ever making this post when faced with (at least!) two of these reprobates, ahem, I mean "esteemed councillors" at the next APUG UK Gathering! :D )

Reminds me of a quotation I saw recently. Can't remember it exactly or who said it, but paraphrased it is "To be thought of as good as a man, a woman has to be twice as smart. Fortunately this is not difficult."

Of course that's not true, in spite of what my wife says :D

Wise choices, and I hope it works out for everyone.

...I would have nominated Whitey.. being a teacher, he can straighten you out with just a stern look ...
