The APUG gallery has changed my photography; you?

Visiting the APUG gallery has pretty dramatically changed my photography. I find it such a different experience from looking at the work of acknowledged masters.

In the APUG gallery I see what others are doing that is both very much the same as me and completely different.

I think it's fairly common that when we see something different that we like we might decide to explore it ourselves. But I have found that it is what I've seen that is most like what I try to do that has influenced me to go in another direction.

Maybe it's just my personality, which is a tad bit contrarian , but there is an element of looking at so much work like my own and not seeing the uniqueness I thought it had?

What has the APUG galley done to your work, if anything?

I wouldn't say that the gallery has dramatically changed my photography, but it has made me want to do more!

I have a similar experience as you to seeing work like mine (or like what I want to be able to do ). I'll think of an idea for a picture, and before I get around to doing it, someone posts it in the gallery!

Hmmm ...

It's always good to see lots of work of others.

It's always good to see lots of work of others.

I don't want anyone to get me wrong. The galley was the main reason I joined APUG (no it wasn't to run off my mouth so much ) There has been nothing better for my photography then seeing what others are doing. I'm not even saying that I dislike the work like mine that has made me feel like going in another direction. It's just been my personal reaction, a sea change that may or may not have been coming no matter what.

I would have to agree with David that the gallery has made me want to shoot more, but I don't think that it has changed my core style. I enjoy looking at the work of others, and viewing their work does sometimes lead to experimentation of new subjects, but what I most enjoy is seeing the work of others on subjects that I usualy shoot.

Dont be fooled by what is in the gallery as to print quality. Get to galleries and museums as much as you can to see real prints. There is a big difference.

Goes without saying Lee! It's one of the blessings of working in NYC that there are endless possibilities to do so!

BTW, as a photo student my son has had to opportunity to visit museums, don white gloves, and actually hold prints by Adams, Weston et. al. in his hands and look closely at their work. I am soooo jealous!

I look at the gallery just as a way of keeping up with what others are doing. So little of the gallery work is in color, and B&W really does very little for me.

Back in the Fall of '02, shortly after discovering APUG, I liked the idea of an all analog website so much that decided that I didn't want to post photoshopped neg scans in the gallery area. So I went to my garage and dug out my enlarger and all my old darkroom stuff and set it up on a handy counter top. Since then I've experimented with new films and papers and developers and techniques, practiced and improved my printing skills, become more active photographically in new directions than I am sure I ever would have done otherwise, invested more than I could probably afford in equipment and materials, and spent many, many, many pleasant and rewarding hours in the darkroom.

Yes, I guess that I would have to say that the APUG gallery has affected my photography

If I played the fiddle, I would have farted on the occasion.
As a matter of fact although I didn't notice the event, the odds are heavily in favor that I did anyway.

I used to have a slow ISDN connection, and got in the habit of not going into the gallery very often. Now that I've got ADSL I find the habit hard to break!

But I find lots of inspiration in the gallery. Mostly inspiration to get better while still doing my own stuff - if I could only find out what that is!

HA! I didn't notice it myself when I passed 1000, or 2000, or 3000, or now 3500 a few days ago...
