Tetenal Paranol S .......any opinions on this developer?

Hello Team,

Recently got a bottle of this Rodinal type liquid developer....

A). Anybody have good results with this developer, I primarily use Fp4 and Delta 100 in 35 and 120....
B) any dilutions you might recommend?
C) More interested in-contrast and tonality than grain effects...(think Colin Corneau)
D) I have had good results with most Tetenal products I have used in the darkroom, I assume this is another quality product, just like cooking , may have to tweak time/temp to get it just right.
E) anybody here use it on 4x5 or 810 sheet film, your thoughts...

Seems a rodinal developer. My personal favourite Rodinal dilution is 1+50 with normal cubic grain, never used it in tabular grain films. It is still a bit grainy in 35 mm but you get good show detail and reasonable developing times.

In 6x7 I like the combination with Tri-X show at ISO 320. In 4x5" I use Rodinal with Fomapan 100 and 200 with very nice results.

Have you found the times to be in line with Rodinal or with Tetenal's seemingly more generous development times (for the same given dilution)?

Paranol has worked very well, I am normally a d76 user from way back, but wanted a different look on both
Tri X and fp4 in 120, results were very nice, good contrast, tonality and edge detail too. I know Tetenal makes very good products like Marisol film wetting agent which I use for streak free negatives. I shall try to post some results after the holidays.
I have only used adox ordinal in the past, and give Paranol a thumbs up...

I used this loads with hp5+

Times with it were bang on.

Its not a pure rodinal clone - times are different and it doesnt have the massive shelflife.

Well... Brexit hit me and my Adox Rodinal supply has dried up and Adox doesn't send it to UK anymore. So I have bought next best thing Paranol, thinking all my dev times will be the same, little did I know it is completely different. I shoot mostly HP5, K400 and F400 but I push them as well, quite often 1x to 2x stop.
So could anybody help me to figure out push times for Paranol, should I just apply the same multipliers as normal Rodinal?

There may be differences, it isn't completely different, so you should be okay. Usually Rodinal type developers are not recommended for "push" processing, something like DD-X being a more standard option.

It is so different, Rodinal (according old Ilford chart) requires 6 min for 1+25 and 11 min for 1+50, however this Paranol requires 11 min for 1+25 and 25 min for 1+50 dilutions.

I also understand Rodinal type is not really recommended however it is super cost efficient. DD-X is really expensive per roll.
I heard good things about XTol for push as it gives true film speed, but don't know what Ilford equivalent is there

There is no Ilford version of Xtol, however there is an Adox version called XT-3 which works exactly like Xtol.

You can always order direct if we are allowed to do a clean export. This is currently the case for orders larger than 170 EUR due to the 130 UKP rule. Apart from this we have more than 8 distributors in the UK which will eventually stock up again.

Actually no, you cannot order Rodinal from the shop. I expect at least an accurate reply from Adox team, not to mention my trust to Adox is minimal now, especially when Ilford or Tetenal can import their chemicals from Germany without any issue.

You are right. Due to Brexit we cannot use a courier anymore at economic prices and this unfortunately eliminates hazardous products from direct shippments from Germany so you would have to buy from one of our distributors. This is the case for everyone the named competitors will also not ship directly.
We will be looking into courier options but I am afraid that the price tag for the export and import clearance will be so high that its more economic to go to one of our distributors again.
They all stocked up but I guess everyone underestimated the post Brexit chaos and from our side there is only so much we can do.

Well... Maybe you guys should open an office here in UK and become your own distributor, like Tetenal or Ilford. Then you’ll have full import export rights.

I doubt that selling just ADOX products is an attractive offer for the UK customers. They want it all and thus we think our dealers are the best choice. We have no problems distributing to a dealer in the UK. Its only about end consumers where the customs handling is outrunning the product value.
Its is simply a huge pity what the UK did and how they left Europe without a deal so that we are now cut of our customers
Product is on its way to several dealers at present.

I have only used Paranol-S for slow to medium films(e.g. FP4, Delta 100 etc). I would use something else for HP5 Plus. To quote from the photo.net site, this is sensible advice:

However with any high speed film R09/Rodinal/ Paranol S you will end with a lot of grain and speed loss.
So for HP5+ expose on E.I. 200 - 250 and start with a standard dilution of 1+50. But it is better to use a slow- or medium speed film with Rodinal, especially in 35mm format.
