That's a good start, but it doesn't allow to compare the same print area, and that's what a test strip is really all about. Nevertheless, the method works well for relatively homogeneous images.

Shimoda, I've sent you a projection print scale in the post this morning, you should be getting it soon enough. Its not the best method, but it will allow you to get a sense of where to start. As you get more experienced with printing, you will, no doubt, put it aside for better methods, or just your better sense.

Very kind of you. I agree with you all that this is most likely a toy to tinker with. But as I stated earlier, I love to try out different solutions.

Ralph I may have missed it but I don't think you have mentioned that your Darkroom Magic site includes a link to a test strip maker which is excellent for both comparison for the same test strip area and doing a test strip across the whole neg.

It may be that modesty prevents you mentioning this, However I can say that I had one made for me( the guy who made it had a laser cutter and access to a workshop) but if you can measure and cut anyone could make one out of wood or plastic.

It is a great piece of kit folks. Ralph's free site deserves a lot of credit.

If you really want to look at the same area with differing exposures, then the projection print scale takes you most of the way there. Put one on some sort of lazy susan turntable with a pie shaped mask to keep all but one segment covered ... expose and turn expose and turn ...expose and turn... Or get rid of the projection print scale and do the same but change the exposure for each turn. A linear device could be made too. I believe someone has already made such a gizmo. Can't remember where I saw it.

I know nothing of website design and maintenance but unless it is a lot of trouble to re-instate the article, then I would have thought that it has to be easier and quicker to refer a member/subscriber to the article than sending the file each time.

Not a bad idea, but the steps of that scale are too coarse. It works roughly in 1/2-stop increments and for fine work, you need increments as small as 1/12-stop.
