People frequently refer to "Britain" (or, say, "Grand-Bretagne") when they actually mean "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" (or "le Royaume-Uni de Grand-Bretagne et d'Irlande du Nord,") despite the fact they are two quite distinct constructs, but it's not as a rule something people get terribly exercised over.

People haven't learned bettter. I assume I'm one of the very, very few over here of my age who know about the designation `UK´. But only because I blasted my ears with BFBS. Don't do that any more though.

I sometimes flippantly term it 'The Untied Queendom' and sit back and enjoy the head-scratching that results...

Amazing how APUG threads can suddenly morph and shoot off in truly bizarre fashions!

Not that I don't contribute to that phenomenon...

Where does the United bit come into the equasion?
We here residing to the West of Offers dyke dont see much unity, nor truth to tell want much.
When you pay proper prices for our water and wind we will talk united.

Regards Paul.

I believe there is a not inconsiderable amount of my taxed income you owe me; please forward your cheque payable to "PLEASE DON'T PROP US UP ANY MORE, LTD." to the following address:

Provinces Reimbursing Londoners Fund
112, Never Going to Happen
LONDON N0CH ANC3

On receipt of the cheque we'll discuss how much your wind is worth.

:D

PS. It's spelt "Offa's". In both English and Welsh. You could probably apply for a rebate from the education system to offset the above payments, to be fair.

What has Offer's Dyke got to do with the OP's original post.

OK you can be forgiven, a little, Retro has moved to a sleepy hamlet close to Offa's Dyke near Oswetry.

I was being facetious.

A kingdom may be united, even when the subjects are only united in things like having to lick the behind of the same sovereign's head when they want to sent mail.

Meanwhile, paper made in the UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland still is european paper.

Anyone remember the OP?

Is it me or is this thread off topic?

Steve

To get back on topic.
I ordered some chemicals with retro on 13/01/09 and have not yet received them despite paying for first class delivery. I have mailed them and left phone messages and had no reply.
Has any one received any ordered goods from them in the last 7/10 days?
Regards,
John.

I've had some problems with them in the past. They're so non-comminucative lately its unreal. I'm supposed to be involved with an article on Retro customers in Wales involved in alt processes for Country and Borderlife magazine. I'm excited about it but this makes you wonder whether they're a good name to be alligned with! Anyway, it was nice of Nigel to put me in touch with the journalist. Perhaps more of his interests at stake though, who knows. They should sort themselves out though, it's a real shame when they could be providing a good service. Doesn't take a lot really, just a more helpful manner. It's funny that their site links here to all this slander!

I have had a fair amount of material with them over the past few years and I must admit that this is the first time I have had to contact them about delivery.
I'll post if I have a reply or goods from them.
Regards
John.

Hold on!!
Just had mail from retro.
Seems they were out of stock of one item but now have had a delivery.
Goods are promised for dispatch tomorrow.
I hope they will arrive soon.
Regards,
John.

Ditto problem!

Ordered a Moersch Amidol Plus developer kit, among others, and at time for testing a few weeks after arrival, I found 5 of 7 included bottles were missing. From the original box!
Started a mail and telephone communication lasting for looong. To cut a long story...I finally got my additional supplies after...10 MONTHS!!! Free of charge of course.
Why mind and not order a new one? Well, with a shipment cost of £21 I could not justify a new shipment on my expenses for a kit worth £25.52.

Retro, shape up please! You´ve got a good selection and better shipment terms for abroad deliveries on chemicals than other UK competitors.

Ahh, "Fog In Channel - Continent Isolated." Still makes me laugh...

Anyway, you're fighting a losing battle here. I'm afraid 'Europe' is commonly used colloquially to mean 'continental Europe' - it's not intended as a slur on anyone's ambitions of Ever Closer Union, it's just a matter of convenience.

Learn to live with it. Petty whining about things like that is what gives pro-EU campaigners a bad name.

When we Swedes travel south, we go "to Europe". This was not changed by us "joining Europe" some years ago. The Russians, even in European Russia, say the same. And now the British. How curious. We do live on an ill-defined peninsula.

I order my Moersch chemicals directly from Moersch in Germany. They arrive fresh in a few days. A little more postage but I consider it worth it.

Moersch are efficient, freindly and very very quick

To me its a no brainer

Tom,

I´ve learned the hard way and now know better. However, I don´t know if PhotoImpex can supply raw chemicals abroad (which was included in the purchase referred to) but maybe they do. I need to get a quote if so.

However2, I found the UK based internet shop much easier to proceed purchases from at time. Point and click interactively online and not the print-write-send procedure as the german shop encourage.
Kind of cannot understand why there are still limitations (in some countries) not to fully use the internet possibilies there is. I am used to very evolved interactivity from home where use of credit is part of daily routines in whatever deals there is. From bank transfers to buying hot dogs in a street stand down town.
Lazyness? Perhaps. ;-) But nowadays I am much more confident with online transactions than sending faxes or scans by email. Eventhough I prefer "the old fashioned" black&white photography way I am not reactionary and like the potential in anything new.

And, every photography dealer do, more or less, offer their unique selection and what Silverprint might have is not offered by someone else. And what FotoImpex can deliver cannot be send by others due to legal restrictions etc etc. I hand pick whatever goodies from different dealers all the time since there are different selections and different regulations. Moersch, Maco, PhotoImpex (actually), Fotospeed, Silverprint etc etc.

Ooops, long answer to short q. Sorry! ;-)

Laparn,

Why not order from one of the German suppliers?

Tom.

Laparn,

I've noticed what you mention as well; German suppliers not seeming to accept credit / debit cards (plastic money). I suppose ordering from the UK is sensible for Harman products with the advantageous exchange rates.

Tom.

AFAIK the dealers in Germany have to give 3 to 5% to the credit card company - far too much for the profit margins in todays market.

Typically 2.5% "handling fee" in the UK.

They aren't just picking on the Germans

I spoke to Silverprint today (4th June 2009) who told me Retrophotographic were no longer trading "We went up and collected all their remaining stock". Not gospel, but that confirms what most people have suspected for some time now.

The link from Fotoimpex (Berlin) no longer works it points back to Fotoimpex.de, as does the Fotoimpex.co.uk website, Retro haven't advertised in B&W magazine for 2 or 3 months.

If that's what Silverprint said it will be true.

Ian
