Looks like it will be ten years for me in July. Apug has brought two great groups of things to me.

The wonderful lessons more knowledgeable people have given, either to me or directed to others that I have read.

Attending Bill Schwab’s 2008 Photostock and responding to the thought that the only thing that could be added was more frequent events. That was the happy start of the 3 or 4 times a year “NE OH Gatherings”, that have allowed my wife, three Lady Labradors and me to enjoy 10-25 like minded photographers for three day weekends at our house near the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the OH & Erie Canal and the Cleveland Flats.

Thanks Sean for turning on the lights.

I hadn't thought about it until this thread, but my tenure here is almost identical....ten years on! As Bethe mentioned, the people I've met in real life from here (including her) must go unnamed as I'd hate to miss anyone, but there have been quite a few. There's a strong sense of community and common interest that's irresistible. I've learned a lot, and hope I've contributed some as well. But, special for me, having just moved a thousand miles away from my home of more than four decades, has been meeting and spending time with people from Jacksonville who I've known through apug for a long time. It's been like meeting distant cousins, and has been extremely welcome. So, thanks, David for your reflective post and all the memories it evokes. And, thank you Sean for making this site the wonderful place it has been and continues to be!!

To add to my earlier post....
To me, the most remarkable thing about APUG is the sense of community. As a sad example, I note that the recent passing of Canadian member Lightwisps is noted in a thread started by Ricus, a member from South Africa - on the other side of the planet. The community is truly international, and it certainly has widened my horizons.

I guess I will hit ten later this year. I remember what I was doing too, just quit the newspaper staff position to go full time freelance...ten years as my own boss, now that is a milestone to me...damn.

Ten years ago I vowed to do several projects and work my way back into shooting film full time, it all happened. And despite what I worried about happening back then, "Film-ageddon" not only did not happen, the silver print is alive and well and will thrive....

I know what I want the next ten years to look like though and that includes a *lot* of success as a film only fine art shooter....the less time I spend on the web, the more that is likely to actually happen....need to strike that balance...

Epic post David

It's become a second family for many of us. Through all the ups and downs it continues to be a worthwhile venue for many, that's the biggest reward for me.

Great thead. Thanks, David, for starting it. It's hard to believe we've been here this long.

I'm embarrassed, I've not hit 2 years and have more posts... Eep! I should be shooting more! except that sometimes in posting WHILE I'm shooting... Hah!

This place saved my life in a way. Without APUG I think I would be lost.

Like several others I joined after reading about APUG in UK B and W magazine, and this'll be my 11th year....I've really enjoyed taking part in the print and postcard exchanges, though shame the likes of Aggie aren't around any more [the clog story was class:D!] Shine on, crazy diamonds!

Hi David,

I'm sure we've crossed paths on APUG over the last 9+ years that I have been here. There has been a lot of change in my life over the last 9 years, but APUG has always been here. I don't post much, but I do read a great deal about the experiences of other film photographers through APUG. It is a part of my life, as are you and the other APUGgers who have enjoyed another decade in film.

Almost 10 years for me as well, David. Sure doesn't seem like it. I've met a number of APUG folks in person and am grateful for those and the other connections I've made as well as the incredible information (much of it anyway) I have found on this forum. I'm washing some prints now and am about to crack open an IPA so here's to another 10 years.

No, that is the sign it is working. We are all lost. You just haven't been here long enough to realize it.

I remember at the APUG conference I had to drive Simon Galley, Tim Rudman and Les McLean over to an event. I was worried that an accident would set traditional photography back 50 years!

Everything went great and we had a few drinks by the keg later that evening.

Good times!

This post was delightful to read. While I have been here for only 5 years, I have sure enjoyed it. It is always a sad day to read of a member's passing.

I think I use to chat whilst at work... with revised seating arrangements (open plan!) that's not really possible. just tried it and it doesn't work for me anyway!

Chatroom doesn't work in my current browser 'Opera'... Says 'app is not supported'. Wonder if other browsers might work.
