I suppose there's a first time for everything.
While I've never had a premature detachment, I have seen goop on two rolls. In the second case, it was on the tail, but the first time I saw goop, it was on a frame. When I had photo class, the film was attached to bulk spools with vinyl tape, but the kids would cut the spool off rather than untaping it. I have a winding ritual which avoids fogging the tail, so I tend not to cut off the spool, but peel off the tape.
The painter's masking tape sounds interesting.

First happened on the ferry over to Alcatraz. Couldn't use the 35mm the rest of the night. Second was a couple days later wandering SF. I ended up sitting on the floor in the Starbucks bathroom, lights out, with our jackets stuffed under the door, so I could open the cam and roll the film back into the canister. Definitely learned my lesson that trip about being more cautious with my taping.
