Taking the film out of the canister

Whut?!?! Vinyl electrical tape?? First time I've heard of using that.

I suppose there's a first time for everything.

While I've never had a premature detachment, I have seen goop on two rolls. In the second case, it was on the tail, but the first time I saw goop, it was on a frame. When I had photo class, the film was attached to bulk spools with vinyl tape, but the kids would cut the spool off rather than untaping it. I have a winding ritual which avoids fogging the tail, so I tend not to cut off the spool, but peel off the tape.

The painter's masking tape sounds interesting.

Funny thing- so do I. Course the factory loads I talking about come from the Miller factory.

Method one.
Use a pocket swiss army knife with its can opener blade.

Good advice about the tape, I will have to try that. My first couple of rolls bulk loading this summer, I had two instances of premature detachment while on vacation. First happened on the ferry over to Alcatraz. Couldn't use the 35mm the rest of the night. Second was a couple days later wandering SF. I ended up sitting on the floor in the Starbucks bathroom, lights out, with our jackets stuffed under the door, so I could open the cam and roll the film back into the canister. Definitely learned my lesson that trip about being more cautious with my taping.

On the OP, I always pop my canisters open, either with a bottle opener for pre-rolled film or just pop open or unscrew my bulks.

Under the wheel of a car at the lights works quite well if your good at catching.

So what's a little added density? We could all use a little more.

Otherwise ... Back when I was getting a paycheck from the Army, I was in a Combat Engineer Battalion .. my MOS was "Combat Demolition Specialist." Our answer to nearly everything was "explosives" - so possibly a "cutting" charge ... Composition C4 - or whatever number it is up to now. Certainly would be effective, reliable and quick.

BTW... This thing about explosives in shoes ... no need to have anyone remove them ... just have anyone suspected jump up and down ... that should be enough to set off the blasting caps...

I use #2.

I start the film into the reels before the lights go out (there is sufficient leader for it). I sometimes have 6 or 7 reels on the table with the film already started. I use Patterson reels and pull the can away about a foot and crank it up then pull again....etc. A good tug to make sure when I'm at the end (had one bind once and cut it thinkin' I was at the end - ooops).

I don't use bulk cartridges, I use once fired stuff you can get free from any lab by the bucket. I only use them once and discard. I tape the new stuff to the old 1/4 inch or so of film stickin' out of the cartridge. So now I feel for my tape to know for sure when I'm at the end too. I use Scotch tape.
