I have a theory that Miranda is only published (and only writes what she does) to generate the outraged letters from readers disagreeing with her for the next issue...

Yeah - she's rude & ignorant but it gets a reaction. Also it means the SMH can claim to be even handed - whenever they are accused of being lefties, chattering class or whatever they can point to Marauder & say that they give both sides a fair crack. Just ignore the fact there is no level of intelligent debate. There is more in-depth critique of rugby league than there is of art.

If you eastern suburbs trendies don't shape up you'll be getting Miranda 3 times a week and questioned on your comprehension of her columns afterwards. See what happened when you continued down your erroneous paths: she turned up twice a week.

Don't forget that that fine example of artistic appreciation Ron Walker is on the board, and be thankful that there is still at least a nod toward the arts by Fairfax (excepting serious music, of course).

I'd give quids to be a fly on the wall when David Marr, John McDonald and Miranda pass each other in the corridor.

The Herald doesn't need to be even handed, it's not the govt. funded ABC, however the role of all opinion piece writers at Fairfax begs some definition. Objectivity seems to be on the wane in all media in Oz.

That feels better! And my Arista negs in Pyrocat look encouraging, on to the proof!

Regards - Ross

Ross, I'd also like to know where you got the Pyrocat in Oz. I want to try it out.

Dear Thanasis,

My first trial was with the Freestyle kit, just to have all the chemistry in one box.

As it provided encouraging results I ordered the makings from Vanbar in larger quantities. The small glitch was that Vanbar's supply of pyrocatechol must have been of a higher grade (maybe analytical?) and bumped up the price quite a bit.

It was certainly clearer and whiter, Freestyle's looked like floor sweepings, but worked fine.

It's fairly easy to mix and uses very small quantities - say 20ml of each part to 1 litre water, so eventually it was not so expensive. Stains well with TriX and Arista Edu.

If you check Vanbar's website there is just about every chemical you need for a number of processes, the Test Tube Factory in Harris St have the labware (apart from scales for weighing small quantities, mine were from an Oz internet source, or try jeweller's suppliers) The Test Tube Factory also have chemicals at forbiddingly high prices, Vanbar's are more realistic.

The Test Tube Factory also tried to sell me an animated James Brown doll which gyrated to "I Feel Good"

Distilled water from the supermarket laundry section, avoid the rip-off auto suppliers.

Good luck - Ross

Dear Ross,
Thanks very much. I had a feeling that there would be a visit to Vanbar. I hope its not too much to ask but where did you find your recipe?
I have seen that Vanbar do indeed have a very wide range of chemicals. I was thinking about mixing up some Divided D-76 but as you pointed out, im going to need some scales, flasks etc.

Thanks again and regards.
Thanasis.

The next Sydney camera market is on this Sunday 29 June at the Ultimo Community Centre
40 William-Henry St, Ultimo. Entry via Bulwarra St.

Opening time is 10am but if you get there early and hire a small table you can get the jump on the regular punters and check out all the gear before anyone else! Actually, if anyone has surplus gear they want to get rid of in future it might be an idea to pool together for a table and have a fun day. I've done it once and managed to come out ahead!

There's a Harold Cazneaux exhibition on at AGNSW until August 10th.
I like Cazneaux. Most of his photos were taken in Sydney from approx 1910. He did commercial photography & personal work. His style was quite elegant.

There's another show in Sydney that's only up for a week but sounds interesting.
Ellie Young at the Meyer gallery, 269 Bourke St Darlinghurst until the 29th. She shoots large format then makes salt prints, Henry Fox Talbot style. Apparently there is a scanning stage & they are printed from a digital neg. I'm very keen to have a look at some salt prints. Subject matter is details of nature.

This talk is on at the Powerhouse museum on Sunday 29th 2-3pm.
Just down the road from the camera fair.

Early Sydney and Environs, William Hetzer’s photographs of Sydney 1858-1863
Geoff Barker, Assistant Curator, Total Asset Management Project
A discussion on William Hetzer’s stereophotographs of Sydney. Released between 1858 and 1863 in boxed sets these photographs are among the earliest taken of the streets and landscape around Sydney town. The Powerhouse Museum holds around 19 of Hetzer’s images in its collection and these will provide the basis of this talk.

The next Sydney camera market is on this Sunday 29 June at the Ultimo Community Centre
40 William-Henry St, Ultimo. Entry via Bulwarra St.

At first I was thinking that I have no particular reason to go to this, but on further thought I realise there might be some chance of picking up
lenses for my Crown Graphic esp 210 approx for portraits
cable release with a straight tip as the tapered ones don't fit my CG shutter
good 75-125 lens for a Kodak Ektapro projector
072 infra red filter with 39mm thread

doubt I'll be there at 10am though.

Did anyone have any luck at the camera fair? I didn't get anything for myself but I bought an EOS 500 with zoom for my 15yo niece. She's been learning using my Olympus SP for awhile but I wanted to get her something with more automated functions & takes modern batteries. The Canon was in good nick & cost $60.

I checked out the Ellie Young salt prints at Meyer gallery last week & they were excellent. There was a stunning image of a snail shell. She has some connection with Gold Street studios in Victoria which looks an interesting place from the brochure, with courses on all sorts of alt processes.

Had a chat to the proprietor of Meyer gallery. She is the wife of Bob Kersey of the Black Mountain photo school. This was the second show at her new place. I think there will also be painting & sculpture exhibitions but it sounds like there'll be plenty of photography. Info on the next exhibition follows.

You are invited to the opening of COMMON GROUND an exhibition by Ian Williams and Tim Williams on Wednesday 2nd July 6 - 8pm at

Meyer Gallery
269 Bourke Street
Darlinghurst
02 9380 8014

Exhibition end 27th July.

Wed - Sat 11 - 6pm
Sun Noon - 4pm

There is a group show of 7 photographers opening at the Global gallery, Paddington this Wednesday Sept 17th.
The gallery is at Comber St Paddington, just off Oxford St at the Darlinghurst end.
http://www.globalgallery.com.au/index.aspx?status=home1

Most of the photographers are associated with the ACP in some respect.
Julie Sundberg will have photos that were shot in New York in the '80s & printed this year as Cibachrome by Sandy Prints.
Tom Luscombe has work that is shot on type 55 Polaroid & then scanned & output as inkjet prints.
I'm not sure about the other photographers, I'm assuming there'll be a mix of analogue & digital work.

Two shows worth seeing at the ACP.

Derek Henderson - I Go Down to the River to Pray
big colour prints, looks like they're from 4x5. Subject is a river in New Zealand & the people who live near it. Mostly shot in soft light it has similarities with some recent trends in big colour art photography (Soth etc) but is well done, beautiful prints. runs until 14th Dec

Trent Parke - The Christmas Tree Bucket
His last big exhibition at the ACP was dark B&W work from a drive around Australia. This one is saturated colour prints of Aussie suburbia at Christmas. There's a lot of use of flash & similarities to Martin Parr, but he has a great eye & this show is inventive, ugly, stupid & funny. It's been hung well with some large prints & also sequences of smaller prints, e.g. a dozen or so of people asleep or unconscious due to festivities & Aussie heat.
runs until Jan 24th but gallery is closed 25 Dec until Jan 12.

A new show at the State Library of NSW on the work of George Caddy. Mostly photos taken at Bondi in the 1930s of the craze for beach acrobatics. Photos were made with a Voigtlander Bergheil with a roll film back & flash. I haven't seen the show, just some examples but it looks fascinating.

Goldie,
I assume you are on the State Library mailing list. There is a free floor talk on this Wed 10th. Details below:

Bondi Jitterbug: George Caddy and his Camera
Don't miss our latest free exhibition featuring 60 stunning B&W images taken by amateur photographer and champion jitterbug dancer George Caddy, in the 1930s and 1940s.

Recently discovered and exhibited for the first time, these extraordinary Bondi Beach photographs reveal a beachside parade of lifesavers, fashionable sunbathers and the daring gymnastic feats known as ‘beachobatics’. The exhibition runs until 22 February 2009 and includes an old news reel of jitterbug dancing, rare 1938 colour film of Bondi Beach and a novelty photo board allowing you to take a digital image of yourself as a gymnast.

Join us for a Free Gallery talk with the Library's Curator of Photographs, Alan Davies, and fashion expert, Margot Riley, on Wednesday 10 December, 6.15pm start.

Also for lovers of fine photography is the Anthony Browell exhibition of wonderful enlarged 8x10 pinhole photos at Point Light Gallery and Some fine work by Bruce Crowther at the Meyer Gallery

Also one close to my heart given all the classic album covers he did is Henry Diltz's show at blender gallery.
Dead Link Removed
The weekend before last I caught Henry's floor talk at the Blender followed by Trent's talk at ACP. According to Trent his current project is back in black and white using flash inspired by the recent work featured in the current exhibition.

There is a Gordon Undy show on until 31 May at Point Light gallery in Surry Hills. The exhibition is titled 'meditations' & the photos are platinum/palladium prints from large format negs. Subject matter is details of a beach. Beautifully printed as you'd expect. I got quite absorbed in the highlight/shadow transitions. Nothing like a good contact print.
