To my sorrow, I read today that Sven Nykvist has passed away. If I mention films like: Sleepless in Seattle, Crimes and Misdemeanors, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Sacrifice, Fanny and Alexander, Autumn Sonata, Hour of the Wolf, Persona, Winter Light, and The Silence you will know his excellent cinematography.
His work has inspired me very much as a photographer and will do so for the rest of my life. He certainly was one of the best cinematographers ever.

Ah, I'm sad to see this. He shot one of my favorite movies, Cannery Row....

Cannery Row is a visually outstanding film thanks to Nykvist. I also loved the story, humor and, of course. the music. It is one of the very few movies that I actually purchased on video and have enjoyed it many times.

Does anyone know the reason that it hasn't been released on DVD? Every piece of junk that has ever been made is available but not this great film. I'd buy it in a minute for the improved visual and music quality.

Nykvist is dead, long live Nykvist. I have only seen The Silence, but it is a jewel of a movie.

I don't know why it's not on DVD, but there was a major dispute between MGM and the original actress designated to play Suzy De Soto, namely Raquel Welch. (Um, I'll just let that sink in for a minute - imagine the movie with her in that part.) When it becomes available on DVD I'll snap it up too....

Sorry, didn't mean to derail this to one particular movie....

Ah, so sad...

I so admired his work and doubly so because he used to take a hand cranked B&H 2709 35mm camera out and shoot slient pickups for his sound films.

He was a jewel.

RIP Sven
