Well said Brother. Wow...from Susan Sontag to Apollo 8. We've taken this thread around the moon.

Apologies to those with whom I was discussing earlier, then abruptly disappeared. For some stupid reason there is a sort of lame expectation out there that just because someone signs and hands over a paycheck, they expect that actual work be done in return.

Just where the heck did THAT come from anyway...

It's so unreasonable. You'd think modern society would have found a better way and have machines do all the labor; this gettin up early is the most annoying:sad:

sorry ... i got through 6 pages of this thread and didn't finish ..

what i find strange is that some suggest only "photographers" can write about "photography" ...
what denotes a "photographer" ? someone who "photographs" ? or is it "something else" ?
if it is using a camera to make photographc images that are pleasing to someone, ( the maker, or someone else ) that is one thing
and pretty much everyone over the age of 1 is a photographer ... it is something else -- fame, fortune &c gained from making photographs, than most
most of the people who write, critique, post anything about anything photographic on this ( or any other ) website ( or voice their opinion publicly, over dinner, drinks, coffee YELP! &c ) should stop because they lack, seriously lack, everything which is required to have a valid opinion.

Hi John
Wiki says Susan has written and directed four films...
But I would but want that to inhibit your comments...

I went through all 12 pages. I'm glad I did not read the damn book.

Hi John
Wiki says Susan has written and directed four films...
But I would but want that to inhibit your comments...

its great to know that she was able to have a valid opinion about film making, since she
had experience directing films ... but her book was on [still]photography, not moving pictures. :whistling:

i am not an expert in susan sontag and i have never claimed to be one ...
i am not expressing my opinion on her, or her book or the body of work that she made
behind the camera, or using a pen or typewriter, but i am voicing my opinion
about the people who are unable to accept her opinions about photography
because she was not " a photographer" ... it seems that people who have strong and vocal opinions about her
and her book ( and all genres of photography ) seem NOT to be experts on susan sontag, her oeuvre, ( or photography )
yet they offer their opinions freely ... just like she did in her book.
why are these critics' opinions ( more?) valid than hers?
and why, by their own words, should these critics even be able to express their opinions
seeing they are not experts in any of the fields they are commenting.

xmas, please disregard all of my comments if you wish,
as i not an expert in anything ... and as a result

my opinions are as worthless as 99.99999999% of the opinions out there. :munch:

[i finished reading the other 6 pages]

one thing to remember! If a publishing company sees fit to publish what you, or anyone else has written, then. . . . it has an audience. No publishing company will publish work, if no one buys it, reads it, or teaches it in school. NOW,, I am not arguing that Sontag has an amazing point of view, that you knuckleheads can't quite get, cause your knuckles are draggin! ( just kidding)( havin' a beer right now) . But what I am saying is She, ( right, wrong, indifferent ) has a political base who supports, not just her, but the publisher. Remember people, there are still neo nazi groups out there, In others words. . . . .. "it takes all kinds to raise a village" or something like that. . . .

...raze a village...???

how do you know if she's s witch? My leige. . . . .

I went through all 12 pages. I'm glad I did not read the damn book.

I read the first few pages at a bookstore and put it right back on the shelf. Felt boring and pretentious - who is this lady anyway?

We oughtn't to be speaking ill of the dead like this.

She's been raised (not razed) from the dead and is alive and kicking in this topic. Probably best to put her back her box.

xmas, Watch Monty python and the Holy grail!! There is a good part when sir galahad has a very entertaining line of questions about wether "she's a witch" you can see John Cleese(sp)? in the crowd saying" burn her, burn her, she's a witch !!!! its very amusing. Best regards greg.

AA catches his share of derision here, and he was a good photographer who also wrote books.

Why? Is this part of the APUG forum rules?

cause it is in bad taste ?

AA catches his share of derision here, and he was a good photographer who also wrote books.

not really him who gets derision, but sometimes his followers ...
i am sure he was a wonderful person, eager to teach, and learn but sometimes followers take a left ( or right ) turn
and his ideas somehow turn into a weird religion and the followers bash people who don't believe ...

excellent point J> On another note. Even if i do not agree with a lot of Sontag ideas/comments, she was very passionate about what she believed to be injustices in life. I suppose everyone has a right to express 'em. Now that I am thinking about it, It really doesn't surprise me that her critique doesn't bode so well here. From what I remember reading, her critique was "conceptual" in nature, therefor "details" of photography are/were somewhat moot.

yup ... !

i made no reference to nazis or anything similar to that ..
just that sometimes people who love their system of doing things so much
let it cloud their judgement ( maybe ) and are not nice towards people who act or think differently ...
same thing happened in this thread to a certain degree ... people didn't like what she had to say
so they claim she had no right to say it ... or in the lik or kinkade threads ... mr lik sold a photograph for millions
or when mr kinkade died, people say nasty things about them and suggest they don't deserve any of what they got ...
same old same old ...

i suppose someone had to mention nazis for godwin's law to take effect
