Superia Venus 800 = Superia X-TRA 800 ?

Hi Everyone! I noticed that the Japanese market has the Fujicolor Superia Venus 800 and the American market the Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 800. Both are Fujifilm and not too different in price, I'm doing some research and tests on high ISO color film.

Do you guys know if it's a re-branding or if there is any actual difference in the two films?

They are both made in Japan. Probably the same.
Lexus used to have Toyota logos here in Japan. They just recently labeled the luxury models Lexus here.

Maybe the Superia Venus 800 is for dimly lit glamour shots? On a more serious note I wonder what the basis was the use of the word Venus? Doesn't seem to have much to do with any aspect I can think of relating to Fuji Superia.

No, these are totally different films. For the correct answer for this or similar question you have to make a simple thing - open the datasheets and compare graphs. Venus 800 probably is better, cause it's Dmax is higher.

Superia X-TRA 400 and Superia Premium 400 are both different films and are sold side by side here in Japan, theres a chart in some of the shops illustrating the difference

階調 translates as tone, 硬調 on the high side of the up/down scale means high contrast

色調 translates as colour tone.

So up is high contrast, down is low contrast, left is low saturation, right is high saturation.

That's a chart of color negative films. You should not have to give up exposure latitude if you want increased color saturation.

God I miss Reala film. The most amazing film I've ever had the pleasure to shoot.

what research are you doing?

I'm making a list of all the available color negative films worldwide. And shooting all of them in similar(ish) conditions, a colorchart, light . It all started as a game for myself to see what film should I stick to, but i decided to put the results online as a kind of informal review you can take a look, it's on my bio, critics are welcome!

Contrast makes the eye think the colors are saturated.
Difficult to introduce a low-contrast high-saturation film.

Reala 100 was a very nice attempt.

Kodak's Ektar is said to be more contrasty as other negative films, but sure has more latitude than slide films.

There were unsubstantiated rumors, that Kodak committed to focussing more on negative films and leaving the slide film market to Fuji, and vice versa. This might explain why Fuji is not overly active in the color negative film segment.
