Suggestions for selling a portfolio of prints

Any suggestions about putting together a group of prints to sell as a portfolio.

I'm thinking of putting together a few groups of photos ..... maybe 8-10 in a group.... and selling the group together as a portfolio.

The plan is to make 8x10 prints... mount and matte them.

In the past I've offered the 8x10's as individual sales but I want to concentrate the single sales on larger prints.

Open to suggestions.

Portfolio sales

Hi Rob:

If you mount and matte the prints the portfolio box will end up being very large - and very expensive.

8 X 10 images on 11 X 14 paper would look nice and if each print were dry mounted to another piece of 11 x !4 photo paper it would have good heft and be able to withstand handling.

You should probably talk to a good graphic designer for the design of the portfolio box. I'd recommend John Orr in Markham at 905 201 0705. I did a lot of work with him when I was in advertising.

I think it is a good idea Rob....I am not sure how to go about it myself so will follow the post. I was thinking of going with larger prints (11x14) not sure what kind of archival box could hold the prints etc.

have you thought of having the images bound in a book
and presenting them THAT way?
matthewbetcher, a member here, does exquisite book making.
it might be an intersting alternative to what you already thought of ...
unlike having books published, you don't have a garage filled with
10,000 books and you don't have to worry about lousy print quality.

for 25 years i have made books as well ( japanese and signature binding )
it is a nice way to present work.

I presume you've seen the small portfolios produced by Brooks Jensen? www.brooksjensenarts.com. I haven't seen one but the way he presents them seems like a good idea. However, they are unmounted prints.

there are a lot of variables involved ....
i wouldn't be able to give an idea without
knowing materials, sizes and all sorts of things like that.

i am speaking for myself, i am not sure what matthew's rates might be.

8x10 prints on 11x14 boards look as if they need more room to show their best. Check carefully the matting to see your prints show well. I know Michael and Paula use 13x15. I have seen some with 14x17 and 14x18 that show 8x10 much better. (just my opinion)

Once you decide on the presentation size, stick with it if it works well. Saves a lot of headaches later as you only have one size matting to work with.

A lot to be said about how some photographers work with only one basic size (Michael Kenna comes to mind here) and it takes a lot of worry, storage space and wasted time out of the effort of producing work that will show well whether a portfolio or individual images.
