It seems cheap, but the question that eats at me is: Is it worth twice what it was last year? I'll need to make it so.

Look at it this way; last year APUG was grossly under-priced. This year it's closer to it's actual value but clearly still a bargain!

If you are getting no benefit from APUG then dont subscribe.

Jorge, that's it in a nutshell. I don't have to subscribe to reap the benefits of the site.

I can browse for free, which is exactly what I will do if the only subscription rate is a ridiculous double the cost of last year.

I guess it just comes down to commitment Gbroad. but if you don't feel it is worth it, then you still have the ability to browse and gleen the information that is available on this website..

But it does seem like you have dug your heals in...

Even though you feel that you are getting something from this website, and now it is to expensive(By the way your the only one?), I do hope you will reconsider in the future. And if you don't that is still okay, you will still have this wonderful source available to you, but ultimately, you still have to make the choice..

Satin, I'm not the only one who thinks the price hike is ridiculous.

Sean will get a better idea when he compares renewal/subscription rates with last year, because at the end of the day when it comes to coughing up cash rather than spouting rhetoric in forums like this people will think twice about USD$24.

That's the same price as 5 x home delivered pizza's from Pizza Hut in this part of the world

Just to set matters straight, I do believe the site is worth more than USD$12, just not double. I already stated my support for USD$20. The $24 came from the easily divisible by 12 brigade who decided a monthly cost should be easily determined - even though there is not a monthly subscription option.

As I said Graham,

You are the ultimate one that has to make the choice.....

Boy you guys can get a pizza delivered for $4.80 , man I thought I lived in a great place, I might have to look at moving.. Geeze, I got to pay $20 bucks and still have to drive 7 miles to meet the person delivering the pizza, now that is $20 bucks and 14 miles round trip, I really got to look at the world down under..

By the way, if your stuck on $20.00, I will be more than happy to contribute the other $4.00 so you can stay a subsciber..

Just like gas/petrol, but I'll bet you're not willing to pay twice as much for that.

Huh? I am paying twice as much. Gas in the US has been a ridiculous low price for years. Now there is a chance that market forces will drive gas-guzzling SUVs into oblivion and accelerate development of fuel efficient transport.

But to the issue at hand I repeat the fact that APUG was underpriced and is now still a bargin. Focus on the value of APUG. The fact that the rate "doubled" is meaningless.

Currently, I am paying 3.5 times as much for gas as I was exactly 1 year ago...but I don't have a choice on gas, you do have a choice on this website..

I would prefer to see you make the choice instead of spending so much time bitching.

Ridiculously double? Obviously the benefit of APUG is not worth that much to you, this is fine. Although I have always found it somewhat unfair from people who say "I dont need to subscribe, I can still browse the forums." Well, what happens if Sean can no longer afford to keep the site running because of people who think like you?

In the end is no big deal, you have determined APUG has no great value to you.

Perhaps Sean should adopt the porn site bussiness model, you only get to browse 1 percent of the content and you cannot post. I am sure since APUG has no great value to you, you would not miss it.

Does that mean you only get to read the questions, but you can't see the answers?

Damn Dave, I was thinking the same thing! perhaps we should start a website called The world according to Bob and Dave? Hey we could charge $12 the first year and $23.99 the second year (we wouldn't double it!)

Hi, the original rate of $12 was never intended to do much more than offset operating costs and a fraction of my time working on the site. It was never intended that the $12 would allow me to operate the site in a part time capacity. That rate lasted for over a year until it became frighteningly obvious that I was becoming exhausted trying to manage the site plus other commitments. I knew that I either had to run apug as a real job or close the doors. The $24 figure factored into the percentage of who subscribe and what I needed to run the site part time, and barely at that. After tax and transaction fees that $24 ends up being around 18-19$. I also want to do much more with the site but can only do so much until I'm working for it in a real capacity. So the $12 and $24 are for totally different things. Maybe no one will go for the new rate, but unfortunately it's vital for the site. APUG is registering over 100 new members a week, to think I can sustain the amounts of user support on top of my other responsibilities just can't happen. So far since the price increase subscriptions have actually increased. We are very close to turning apug into a self sustaining operation rather than a guy using all his spare time to work on it. I think there could be a bright future for this site and traditional photography..

Just out of curiousity...

There are 8447 members. How many are subscribers? How many new subscribers are there each month?

Sean,

There is absolutly no reason you need to explain yourself at all, anytime a price increase comes there are going to be people who are unhappy.

your doing a fantastic job, don't worry about explaining anything..

Well Jorge, I guess someone else will set up a similar website. There's no rocket science involved you know. The hardest part is getting visitors and keeping them. Keeping them is the issue at hand here.

Jorge said:

On the contrary, APUG has great value to me, I'm just not prepared to pay USD$24 for it (more than double I paid last year). You can pay $24 if you wish

Now you're being childish, and silly to boot. APUG does not have a business model similar to any porn site.

Graham.

Well Jorge, I guess someone else will set up a similar website.

You obviously were not around when this site was set up, you should see some of the e mail Sean was sent. In any case, if it is so easy, what are you waiting for? I am sure your $20 would be better spent in your site. Or what? Are you saying you like other people to work their butt off and not get anything in return so you can benefit for free?

On the contrary, APUG has great value to me, I'm just not prepared to pay USD$24 for it (more than double I paid last year). You can pay $24 if you wish

See, this is the thing, you are quibbling because it is double the subscription, yet you refuse to see what many others beside myself have told you, what is the value of APUG? At 2/month is undervalued if anything. But nooo...you refuse to see this, all you see is "wow...1 more dollar a month, OMG a 100% increase, I am going to have a heart attack!!"

Now you're being childish, and silly to boot. APUG does not have a business model similar to any porn site.

Look bubba, you do not want to call me childish, specially when you apparently have problems with reading comprehension. I KNOW APUG does not have a porn site business mode, I wrote that perhaps it should. GET IT?

There is a additional option, called discussion. It may be wasted time but at the end of the day discussion is better than argument.

I hope this argument ignites discussion.

Graham,

But your the only one that seems to want to discuss it?

Either you will or you won't, what is so hard to see in that, Sean has made his choice and it is his website......

Yes you may be able to duplicate, but you will never replace this website, either get on the horse or get off..

you got a 50% choice to make here, and we will go on learning while you make your choice..

Get over it, get under it, or just get off it..
