This question is really more general than just 35mm, but here goes. It has to do with focus. If I want to set focus by measuring the distance between the camera and the subject, and then transferring the measurement to the lens, how do I do the measurement. For example, it is the distance between the subject and the front of the lens, or perhaps between the subject and the film plane?

between the subject and the film plane

The distance is from the film plane to the subject. Many 35mm cameras have a circle with a straight line through it on the top of the camera at the rear to indicate the film plane. If a camera does not have this mark then measure te distance from the back edge of the camera to the film guide rails that the film rides on then measure from that distance forward of the back edge of the camera to the subject. With cameras that use sheet film you measure from the film holder installed on the camera to the subject.

Standard focusing is measured between:
subject and film plane

Focusing with a close-up lens is measured between:
subject and close-up lens
