I want to bring my leica places, but I'm concerned about the lack of protection that comes with wrapping it in a sweater and putting it in my bag. Not sure if I should risk it, or wait for the pelican case to come in?

Opinions?

What places?

Where are you going, IE flying, and what case are you waiting for?

If you are wearing a small backpack or something, it should be fine in there. They are pretty robust cameras. Taking it in and out of a Pelican all the time may get annoying.

I'll be carrying it in a large messenger bag, i.e.

with books, a macbook, and a holga. I'm mostly worried about the RF going out of alignment, and the 15mm VF breaking off. They seem pretty fragile..

Well, it depends how careful you are. I think only you can decide.

I prefer to use proper camera- or photo-cases, but I like to keep my equipment looking as-far-as-possible "as new".

However, most quality cameras are really quite robust (look at some which are offered second-hand after a hard professional life...very battered but still in good order!)

Just put it in your bag so that it's not scratched by other stuff. I wouldn't worry much about it. Road vibration will be anyway damped by your body. Your macbook hard drive will long gone before your Leica.

Cameras are meant to be used, not to be put under a glass ball.

I've carried a M6 with a CV 21mm VF permanently attached (covers both 21mm & 15mm quite nicely) on bicycles and on high-level mountain excursions for nearly a decade without any problems.

Usually I use a waist bag (Lowe Pro Off Trail), but any decently padded bag should be more than adequate.
Take a couple of plastic bags for heavy rain.

BTW: Once I missed the pouch and my 90mm Tele-Elmarit went straight down from waist-level to a concrete sidewalk: Damage to the lens cap and shade, but lens itself has no damage at all....
