Street Photographer goes to the Lake

I've been out documenting the local lake scene this summer, working with a Rolleiflex 3.5F and Ilford HP5, shooting a roll a day each weekend day.

The camera is such a welcome sight by so many people. Several of the photos were initiated because the subject called out, "Nice camera." If you're having any trouble going up to people to photograph them, get a Rolleiflex!

It's a continuing project. Every time I go out, I pull the car over to park and think, "There's nothing here," and then get out of the car and there is.

I agree, a TLR brings out the friendly in people. A Rolleiflex looks cool w/ all the chrome and dials, and it's big too, so it's going to be noticed. It's been too long since I did the roll a day thing, good for you. My solution to street shooting is an 85-135 lens on a 35mm camera. It gets you just far enough away so that you're not in people's space.

Yes.
You probably don't realize it, but you have two uncommon personality traits:

1. You make people comfortable. Comfortable enough to be themselves when your camera is pointed at them.
2. You make people confident in you. Confident enough to let you photograph their children.

You like people, and people like you, which shows in your pictures.

And Albada, thank you for that insight--I carry myself with years of experience as a photojournalist so I easily approach people with a smile and excitement to photograph them for this project, which even has its own domain name, so that sells its authenticity.
