Strap or no strap?

I always use a strap because it's the easiest way for me to carry it when I'm hiking. I like to use a longer strap that goes over my my right shoulder and the camera rests again my left side/kidney area. That way I can hike whatever terrain but the camera is always close at hand.

Well if my hand falls off, I don't think I will be worrying about the camera or taking photos. But a neck strap seems to work even when I lose my head.

It is skinny...good for you! Problem with shoulder straps is they start flying al over when you shoot fast and bring attention to the photog. The best for candid work is a little M43..IF it had easy manual controls like the old Oly 1/2 frames.. The Oly M43's are hell to adjust on the fly.

Sorry, but Winogrand took one of the best candids. With Leica and normal strap. And HCB and many others. VM took it with Rolleiflex and those are in the Galleries.
Little digital camera is for those who are still dealing with internal fear. Sorry, grow up, come back later. I'm taking candids with large 16-35 Canon L zoom on EOS film body. Just in front of people. .

It is called zone focusing. By position of tab I know my focusing distance. It saves a lot of time if you taking people pictures. M43 guy calls it as candids .

I always us a strap, usually over my shoulder or wrapped around my wrist. I have an Optec strap but don't like the 'plastic buckle' connectors, so zip-tie the two halves together (I have no need to undo them). My Zorki-4k doesn't have lugs and I'm always thinking I might end up dropping it.

My Pentax 6x7 can mount two pairs of lugs, the manual suggests for security 'e.g. when mountaineering', you might want to use two straps...

How wide of a zone do you aim for, and how accurate of an adjustment do you find you get with it?

I've been thinking of modifying my Dacora I for a more tactile feedback, but hadn't considered something as simple as a ziptie... That may simplify the modification.

Then I had Oly XA I used its 35 f2.8 lens wide open with zone focusing. Wider lens is wider aperture I would go. I used collapsible Cron 50 at f5.6 with zone focusing.

7Artisans is selling focus tab on ebay. It didn't fit Jupiter-3, but I was able to put it on Jupiter-12.

I use bumpers made from old plastic film canisters.

I use neck straps on some cameras, particularly the ones that I use along with an other camera i.e. a Nikon F and a Leica M or a Nikon f100 and N80. I use hand straps on the ones I use alone by themselves.

I generally prefer hand straps. Some of my cameras don't handle well with hand straps and so have neck straps.

For example, I have a Sony neck strap on my Holga.

My smaller cameras stay in the bag until I am ready to take a shot. Therefore I use a wrist strap with every camera I own that will allow one except press cameras which use hand straps and my Rolleiflex which has a neck strap.

Here is an example of a bad strap to use...courtesy of ebay. No doubt it would have the Eric Kim stamp of approval. And if AD Coleman was actually a photog he would prob use it.

To protect the lug mount areas from wear caused by lug rings & quick release metal clips.

I made mines with the leather scavenged from a Zenit TTL case.
