Hi !
A friend of mine had bought a wonderful Christmas present : a brand new 5X12 Canham.
On December 26th, the camera has been stolen in his car near Montpellier in south of France.
The camera bear the number 20590 on the baseplate.
I suspect the thief to be unaware of the exact value of the stolen camera.
But, please these are really scarce, so if you or a friend of yours are offered a "bargain" Canham, could you please advise ?
He is really shocked because he had to sell all it's gear to pay for the Canham and had to wait for Keith Canham to build it... So it was a really _new_ camera !
Thanks for your help !

I've "stickified" this thread so it stays near the top of the page.

Good luck to your friend.

Never leave something visible in a car, especially in the south of France... You should know that.
I had my car broke down so many times in Paris and lost some cameras too. This rule is mandatory.

A suggestion if it should show up on an auction site. Don't ask for serial numbers, this will put up the red flag emidiately, i did that when i spotted my stolen Hassy on the bay last year. The auction ended early with only one bidder who got a deal of a lifetime.
Instead put a high bid on the camera and notify the police.
Good luck to your friend, i'm sure it hurts.

Hi Justin !
No, I've seen my friend on Tuesday night, and no, the camera was not retrieved.
The car insurance (it was a corporate car) paid a very small part of the price (way less than a quarter...) but he has not got his property back.
They only stole the camera. So he may had been followed and tracked. If this is true, the camera won't show soon or will be tampered to show another serial than the one we look for.

I’m sorry to hear this. Needless to say I hope the camera turns up undamaged.

I would also suggest that your friend starts monitoring Craigslist, if it operates in your country.

You can kiss this camera good bye. About four years ago I had all my photography gear and darkroom equipment stolen, including my 8x10 Canham. Luckily my insurance company replaced everything.
