Only on Photrio would a thread about a Diane Arbus statue turn into an equipment discussion
Well, it was actually a comment about the accuracy of the equipment depicted in the statue that brought rise to that part

Ah, Hamlet !!
Could be that Marcellus had the smell of putrefied fish in his nose when he said "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark ..."

Maybe it was the scent of ludefisk preparation drifting over the North Sea?

Art is not necessarily about accuracy. It is not journalism.

It is close enough. Her iconic Mamiya photo had the double lens shade, but the single one probably works better artistically. Though someday (maybe when I grow up) I would like a Rolleiflex (I actually had a Baby at one point), I am kind jazzed they went with the Mamiya.

Hey, for some of us it is GVS (Gear Validation Syndrome).

Now even more people will be confused and think I have a Hasselblad (like the one Diane Arbus used). :outlaw:

Back to the statue: is it appropriate in the Park? Yes, she did shoot there but was that important? Her most representative work was shot elsewhere.

And...is the Statue actually good enough to serve as a tribute? And, given the thousands of great musicians and other NY great artists, why Arbus ? Why not playwrights? Why not ...?

Why not a better NY photographer? Stieglitz...Penn....Avedon...or the most representative ...though that one may never have ventured anywhere without his famous whip..

Why are female photographers so underrepresented, undervalued in the grumpy old man world of photography. They at least make up half of all photographers today.
Think there should be more of it.
Not many statues here of anyone in the arts, you are more fortunate.

One of Diane Arbus' iconic images is the young boy with the toy grenade. I'm pretty sure it was shot in Central Park, so putting the statue there is logical to some extent. The only other NY photographer that probably worked Central Park as much or more would be Gary Winogrand. And I'd rather have a statue of Arbus. And maybe WeeGee at Times Square.

Central Park is photographed continuously every day.

I think the amateur mob is more worthy of statue than was Arbus (whose work I do/did admire).

If it weren't closed now, maybe Hubert's Dime Museum and Flea Circus might have been a more appropriate Manhattan location for the statue. Since the city did commission the statue of Diane Arbus, Central Park is a pretty good back-up location.

So you agree that a statue should be erected for me then, correct?

I also Like/Appreciate her photos.
I wish i could see way more of her earlier work, be it commercial or otherwise.
Good Heavens she was a sad story.
My ex-wife, God Bless Her and our son, has insurmountable Mental Health issues. It is terrible. My ex-wifes Mother had 6 kids. 4 of them suffer from Schizo or Bi-Polar problems. God Awful.
There is an interview with their daughter, not sure which one, that took place not too long after Dianes death.
It is enlightening to be sure, but not the most pleasant thing to watch.
R.I.P. ,

I've only recently started to become more interested in her and her work.

If you don't already have it, I'd recommend a book called 'Revelations'. It's a large book (over 350 pages) that contains some of her earlier work and a lot of biographical information. I've really been enjoying it. At the other end of the spectrum is a book called 'Untitled' by Aperture, which contains photos from a single project of Arbus's. I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it given the subject matter ("...photographs were taken at residences for the mentally retarded between 1969 and 1971, in the last years of Arbus’s life"), but I found the unbridled joy shown in many of the photographs to be heartwarming.

Some of the unauthorized (her daughters keep a tight rein on her work and biography) biographies are quite interesting, offering up some additional information about her.

Deffinitely a C33. The top piece in front of the ground glass was black on the C330. And check out the Twiggy jacket and Nancy Sinatra go-go boots.

Yes, I dig the outfit, both photo and clothes. As I said before, she did much more work in Washington Sq. Park than Central Park. Looks like a rather ugly statue anyway. And let's not forget, her status as a photographer comes mostly from the quality of her ideas, rather than the quality of her craft. BTW, I can recommend the biography by Arthur Lubow, a much better book than the Patricia Boswoth IMHO.

What were her "ideas" ? Nobody here has questioned Arbus's "craft".

Perhaps i have it wrong.
How did she pronounce her name.?

I always say Dee-Ann
Everybody in the video says Die-Ann.

You're right. From what I have read, she always corrected people when they mispronounced her name. They are using the standard American English pronunciation. She (and probably her parents 0r at least one of them) preferred the French pronunciation.
