There's some technically excellent photographers around, producing work that I'd be very happy to have done myself, even have on my wall (given deep pockets). But there's something that lifts the work of say Bruce Barnbaum or perhaps Per Volquartz above many others in my opinion, and I haven't quite been able to conclude yet what it is.

Perhaps it is as JDC suggests, that it will stand apart from current culture and withstand the tests of time. I know they sing on a different level - but how, what is it? I'd be very keen to hear some more theories from those with better Arts Education than me.

A shot like that is a thing of beauty. It was when it was shot and will continue to be for a long long time.

Frozen by a bay area sculpture to put into his next freeze dried container of blood. I kid you not. He is an icon for having saved his blood and freeze dried it and put it into a container that looked like his head. I had to ask the teacher how he kept it from molding if it wasn't refirgerated?

The man is obviously a genius and we should burn all previous work at his feet!

Until a guy who works in his own feces comes along.....

It seems that those individuals who are self-promoters and have great self-confidence are the most successful. The quality of their work is almost a secondary consideration.

hi faberryman

that might be part of the formula/equation but i think there is more to
"fine art photography" than self promotion. personally i think it is just a label to differentiate
people who want to elevate their work above everyone else, maybe their work "is like"
ansel adams or edward weston or john sexton ( people who are well established and well known in art circles )
but there are plenty of regular old run of the mill photographers ( not that run of the mill is bad ) who label themselves
as "fine art photographers" and their work isn't elevated to a high stature. if you go to saatchi-saatchi and look at
what is called "fine art photography" whether it is digitized or analogized/antique process, a lot of it looks the same.
some may be straight forward, some may be "conceptual" but in the end, it is hard to tell any of it apart.
