Jason and I are thinking about an all night shoot, shooting star trails west of Salt Lake. Fri April 24th or sat 25th. The actual new moon is the 25th. I am leaning toward saturday. Who would be interested?

For anyone interested we need to discuss technical info, light discipline, etiquette Etc before we go.

John

That sounds interesting but the 24th and 25th are mid-week according to my calender...new moon on the 26th. I'm out of town the 20th through the 23rd.

Barry

Wrong month, Barry.

How far west of SLC do you have to go to get away from SLC's light pollution? Sounds like fun. I'll be in Yosemite the week of April 12 to the 18th. Sounds like I'll get some of the full moon...yippee!

Vaughn

Oops! That makes it much easier and warmer!!!

This sounds fascinating! I vote for Saturday, purely out of self interest. I'd be able to meet up after my concert, so it would be around 11pm before I could even get there.

Thinking about going to Lone Rock in Rush valley. About 40 miles west of Salt Lake. It is just off of I-80 and north of Dougway.

I am going to go on the 25th of April. I can't make the 24th. Exact location TBA

Hmmm... color or B&W....color or B&W....

Neg, chrome, color, B&W bring it all. No one said you can use only bring one camera.

Ok, so that's this weekend, and I'm realizing the impossibility of being able to go. I thought I"d be able to play the concert that night and skedaddle out there, but it's pretty unrealistic...Sorry! I just don't see it happening for me this time, but I hope all y'all have fun!

Right now the forecast shows rain this weekend and all next week. Also I did some preliminary shots close to lone rock and found out the area over the lake is a flight path for 3 airports and 4 military airfields so I had streaks from airplanes everywhere. If the weather is good we will need to go farther west (salt flats?) or on the north side of the lake to avoid them or just shoot with the planes. If we get rained out does anyone have any other Ideas? Studio night, Pot luck dinner, Darkroom time?

I would say studio or pot luck in case of rain. The weather site I use (although accuracy is always a question) thinks it will be "mostly" clear Saturday night. I'm game for farther west but does the light in Wendover have an effect these days??? Too bad Robber's Roost is so far away! Barry

Wendover will have a small effect but nothing close to what Salt Lake has if we go to lone rock. If the weather is bad we can use my house/studio in sandy for a pot luck and play in the studio. But if the weather is even close to good let's shoot for the startrails.

I just found out that I have to go to one of the kid's birthday party this evening. Unfortunately, I won't be able to come. I thought the party was next week??? Sorry! Barry

I will check the date for the dark of the moon for the next couple of months and maybe the wether will cooperate next time.

Nice image. Thanks for the post. I have been trying to get out on the dark of the moon for months but clouds and bad weather keep messing it up. Looks like you had good luck.
