I have some prints to send to a friend in England, and before I start cutting mats I thought it might be a good idea to find out what the common frame sizes are over there. What size frames are easily purchased in the 8x10 to 16x20 size range?

thanks

"We had a full discussion thread on this a while ago and all of them got listed."

Listed where? On your site? I been there for 15 min but no luck to find anything about the matter.

Ahhh... exactly what I was looking for, but couldn't seem to stumble across it with the search engine.

Many thanks Bob!

I have just looked at the link given by Bob F, and would have to disagree when he says that metric sizes are much more common than inch sizes. You can easily get both but I think inch sizes are much more common.
Typical standard sizes are 10x8 12x10 14x11 16x12 16x20.

Interesting: where do you buy your inch-sized frames? I have tried Ikea, Debenhams, B&Q, Homebase, Habitat, John Lewis, Jessops and any number of high-street poster shops and out-of-town superstores with limited success.

Certainly you can get them from specialist suppliers easily enough, but in my experience anything over 8x10 is rare as hen's teeth in the high street. Habitat is the best I've found but even there the selection is mostly metric.

Cheers, Bob.

Hello Bob,

I think it is the independent framers that seem to stick to imperial sizes. Plenty of these in my area -shops and market stalls. I've had some bargains, but the quality needs watching.
I get my frames from Ultimount through a gallery which sells my photographs-they get them carriage free. Ultimount do frames for photographers in imperial sizes. I use 14x11 and 20x16. Well made, they come in superb packaging which is handy if you want to post them on.
