Hi,
Before I started to experiment with my own film and money, just wanted to check to see if anyone has any helpful input.
I prefer to shoot my film at box speed (usually 400 - 35mm and 120) and overdevelop 1 stop (ergo 800, in this example), generally in XTOL or XTOL 1:1 when I am using "standard" small tank developing methods (i.e., agitating every 30-60 secs). That said, I REALLY enjoyed the simplicity of stand developing in Rodinal 1:100 for 60 mins (what I was doing). I have a wife, a busy toddler, and 8 pets, so concentrating on exact times, agitating every 30 secs, and having an undisturbed 1 minute much less 10-15 is difficult and rare.

a.) So, my question: In various blogs about stand development, some people feel there is no change whether you develop for 30mins, 60mins, 2hrs, etc. while others state that for a push of 1 stop they develop for 120mins, 2 stops 3hrs, etc. GENERALLY SPEAKING has anyone experimented and found out one or the other to be true?

b.) I assume that as long as there is ample developer in the very dilute mixture that extra development time (say 2hrs instead of one) will produce the results i like (1 stop overdevelopment). Alternatively, if extra development time will, in fact, matter, what about Rodinal 1:50 for one hour instead of 1:100? Thoughts? Anyone experimented with the above?

*Basically, in short, what stand time, developer, and concentration will give me (roughly similar) results to that I get with 1-stop overdevelopment using "standard" developer times and tables (high concentration, frequent agitation, short development times).

Thanks!

You could always buy some Tri-X and develop it in Diafine, which is not time, temperature or agitation critical :]

Classic combination too.

temperature and agitation seem to play a more important role than ten minutes more or less.
initial agitation will play the biggest role imo as it defines the shape most (more or less contrast/density)
especially regarding highlights.
for pushing tri x i would not use rodinal.
i dont develop tri x in rodinal at all, but thats my personal taste.

ps. search for "shaping the curve" and you will find a very interesting article about reduced agitation with rodinal and how it affects the curve.
agitation for 10 seconds at min. 0, 5, and 10 should be possible - even for a busy father

Will search for article. Thanks!
