Stains on 14 y/o Film - What's The Cause?

Hello,

I took so film I processed at home 14 years ago out to scan today and was disappointed to see some type of processing error taking root in the form or discolored spots. Original Developer was Microdol X Stock. I do not recall my fixer or wash protocol. Almost certain I did not use hypo-clear back then. Two questions:

1) Any clue what cause of spots are from (there are on negative, this is not a scan artifact)?

2) Would refixing film, hyro clear and water wash it all over again stop the process you see here

degeneration?

Could the spots be artifacts from the scanner.

Hi Gerald, no they are definitely on the negative. I checked carefully with a loupe.

In order try each of the following.

1. Soaking in distilled water to which a bit of Photo-Flo has been added.
2. Then refixing and washing.
3. Bleaching with a rehalogenating bleach and redevelopment. Do not use a solvent type developer like D-76. No need to refix the film.

What Jerry said. You might try reversing steps 2 and 3 if his suggestion does not work.
