Greetings from the U.S., from a former pro who had to put his camera down to manage financially a decade ago and is now slowly brushing off equipment, so to speak, with an eye toward a future including film again, whenever that should become possible.
In the process of thoroughly cleaning out and cleaning in my darkroom recently, I came across a 110 SS film reel. Odd, I thought; perhaps I had brought it home for the odd roll I was requested to process. In my determination to not hold on to anything I didn't really need, I discarded it, only to suddenly remember to my dismay several nights later, while reading Bruce Barnbaum's book, that I had used it as a space-filler in my extra-tall, 1970s Kinderman SS daylight tank when developing two reels of 120, a shorter stack that four 35s. It allowed just the right amount of movement during agitation.
Checking for a replacement, I saw one -- only one -- on Ebay for a price that made me gulp.
In any case, should I be unable to find one cheap (potential sources welcome), I will need a substitute that will not create any unwanted turbulence patterns, and that will, of course, stand up to the chemistry. Any ideas for a man who does not have a workshop full of tools, wouldn't know how to use them anyway, and hopes for an inexpensive solution?

You have rediscovered one of the truisms of the universe. That is you have no use for an object until the day after you discard it.

I would use a short section of PVC pipe of the right diameter. The plastic is non-reactive and will not effect photo solutions.

The prices that you have seen reflect that subminiature reels are much sort after since they are no longer made. The 110 reels are also for 16 mm film from Minolta cameras. Check the subminiature forum to see if any one wants to sell one.

This is a corollary to Murphy's Law. It happens to me all the time. I have a couple of Minox SS reels I'm still hanging on to, though I don't have a Minox (my mother had one) and haven't developed any Minox in about 40 years.

I cut the bottom off of a old bike water bottle like one one in the photograph and then added a hole to the bottom.
