HI all,
I have long enjoyed shooting film in both Bronica and Hasselblad 6x6 cameras, as well as in the Rolleiflex. I also shoot quite a bit in digital, both on Canon and Sony mirrorless. Lately I have been using the square format MF film cameras quite a lot, and have fallen in love with the square negative once again. I was thinking of ways in which I might be able to translate that experience to the digital world, so set about designing a simple, snap-on square viewfinder mask for the Sony A7RIV. I chose this particular camera largely due to its articulating viewfinder, which I felt could best simulate the square waist level finders of the Bronicas, Hasselblads and Rollies. So, I nominally designed and 3d printed one. I designed it to be the full size of the vertical dimension of the Sony sensor, and then used that dimension for the horizontal lengths of the square. I also made the mask a little longer in the vertical dimension to be able to see the line of camera information printed at the bottom of the viewfinder. The mask snaps easily on an off of the viewfinder and slips nicely in a shirt pocket when not in use.
I know some of you will be thinking, "Well, that's nice, but the image produced by the camera won't be cropped" I realize this, but I feel that can be thought of as a bit of an advantage, as this gives you a second chance to recompose in post should you decide to re-think your original composition.
I am happy to share the .STL file with anyone who would like a copy. IF you are interested, just drop me a PM with your email address and I'll email you the file.
Enjoy!
Paul
