Hi Folks.

So... where to go in the Spring? I couldn't make it to the last autumn meeting so perhaps some people had some ideas of location(s) for next spring while there?

The last two meetings have been been Northern England and North Wales, which may/may not be worth taking in to account...

I will start another thread about (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

OK folks, to save us all diving through the old threads I have pulled the following info together

We have previously visited:

Keswick, Lake District
Wells-next the-Sea, North Norfolk
Canterbury, Kent
Avebury

Seahouses, Northumberland
Hawes, Yorkshire Dales
Anglesey, N Wales

The Autumn proposals were :

Anglesey
Brecon
Cornwall
Cotswolds
Dartmoor
Dartmouth
Dorset
Exmoor
Isle of Wight
Marlborough area
Oxford
Peak District
Pembroke
Salcombe
The West
Wales

For the location, I am happy going with the majority. I am hoping to have taken my driving license by the time the spring meet comes up.

I received my theory test books this week ! ... :D

Dee

PS: Cotswolds has been selected by the US group planning on visiting the UK in spring next year.

I would vote for the South-West

Devon or Cornwall anyone?

So far the South West has managed to escape the attention of the APUG weekend

Martin

How about North Devon?
Stunning beaches and just a stones throw away from Exmoor.

Another vote here for the SW somewhere anyway.

I'd probably prefer Devon to the further end, as I know it better. Somewhere central like Totnes offers both cute and quaint (Buckfast and Dartington) with Dartmouth, Brixham, Salcombe nearby and the rest of the coast (Slapton nudist beach anyone?) and of course the great Moor.

Havent been able to make any get togethers yet cos of long distances involved so the southwest/ Devon and Cornwall would be grerat for me.

Bill

I vote for the SW too.

The Cotswolds have been mentioned but if we are looking for photographic locations then I don't think this area is best for a weekend. The countryside is not very accessible. It would need someone who knows the area very well to act as a guide.

Tony

Happy to go along with the majority!

I know west Cornwall inside out so this would be fine with me. Not photographed in Devon/ east Cornwall though.

Bill

I know North Devon very well (lived and photographed there for 30 years) so if you need assistance on locatiobs etc I can help. Now live in West Cornwall and can travel up to Devon or assist here as well. But Bill is a local chap and his Cornish knowledge would be greater than mine.

Cheers,
Neil.

Well, if it's an open invitation, I'm up for it. The only dates I'm definitely not up for are the weekend of 28 March as (a) my birthday's 26/3 and (b) my missus has bought us tickets to go see 'an evening with Joe Cornish' in Chelmsford (just round the corner from where I live) that weekend.

Not fussed about venue as I've lived / travelled all over the place in my time and it'd just be great to meet some kindred spirits. SW sounds good, though, as it's a VERY long time since I had a holiday in Devon or Cornwall and the opportunity of some big seas and moorland in springtime sounds tempting. Happy to go with the flow if another venue is chosen, mind you.

Do you tend to take over a guest house / hotel for the weekend? We booked all the rooms in a hotel in Windermere a few years ago as part of a fell-walking trip. It's incredible the discounts you can get if you pick an 'unpopular' weekend.

Anyway, I'm more than willing to help with the logistics if help is needed.

Paul

I live in east Cornwall and I'm more than willing to show people my neck of the woods if its needed.
I know its a further drive for alot of folk but my vote would go towards west Cornwall, some really amazing coastline down there. I've just got back from a fortnight in Cuba and if I had to pick a place out of west Cornwall and Cuba to photograph again it would definatly be Cornwall!

Mike

It looks like it Martin. The options seem to be Cornwall, Cornwall, Cornwall... or Devon...

Any additions to:
* West Cornwall (St Ives?)
* Mid/East Cornwall (Newquay?)
* North Devon (???)

Locals please feel free to suggest better bases - I don't know the area at all!

You wouldn't be kind enough to elaborate more on this comment Mealers? Only, I have always thought that Cuba was 'THE' destination when you have a camera in hand.

It would be good to hear why this was not the case fron someone who has experienced it.

Cheers

Nope – reading back through the thread this is all we suggested :surprised:

We seem strangely in agreement as to the next meet general location

Outer Hebrides anyone ? :D

Martin

The further west you go in Cornwall the narrower the peninsular gets, this gives easy access to both the north coast and south. St Ives would be a good base for this, in fact from here, any part of west cornwall can be reached easily : The Lizard, Godrevy, Penzance, Lands end, Cape Cornwall, Sennen area are all great locations with awesome coastal scenery.

However, Exmoor/North Devon sounds interesting as I've never been there and would find it hard to choose between the two.

Bill

Personally, I found the most westerly bit of Cornwall has the best weather.

Of course it rains at Lands End/Penzance/St Ives but the weather fronts tend to move through quickly

When using a LF camera it presents problems - it takes so very long to get the camera set-up that by the time I am ready to shoot - the light has changed - sometimes several times

It can be quite character building
