Hi:
I do a lot of travel and photography in the inland areas of Southern California. I especially like eastern San Diego County. Places like Jacumba and Carrizo Gorge offer many wonderful places to use film cameras. If you like these areas too, and live someplace where you can commute to them, reply and I will start keeping an interest list to let folks know about casual meet ups and outings. I will be posting in the Groups-California-San Diego page as well, but I wanted to put something here because people all over Southern California drive to the same areas. I might be heading to Joshua Tree in the next few weeks, so I will post that and see if anyone wants to come out for a day or two. I was out by Barstow and Ludlow along old Highway 66 last week. I also need to get back to Niland and the Salton Sea soon. Hope to hear from some you.
Chris

Welcome to APUG

I am interested. I am in West Los Angeles. I also do offroading to get to places that I cannot hike to.

I would be interested. I live in the uptown area of San Diego.

South Orange County, here

Los Angeles, northeast. Great idea, keep us posted!

Marin County but my daughter and I love shooting down south. We just returned from Mono Lake and Lancaster, I'm looking forward to showing her Salton Sea and Joshua Tree. And yes, she shoots film

Ok, good to hear from some people. When the weather settles down a bit I will post for a outing and we can see how it works out. Chris

I'm up in NorCal but get down there often. Just got back from Death Valley:

Borrego is wonderful, but really quite a ways south from even Joshua Tree. Right on the Border.

At one time, now I've slipped into the wrong side of Pioneer Blvd.

But, but... I need to know which is which to know if I grew up on the wrong side of town!

I used to walk to high school (Excelsior) down Pioneer Blvd. Boy, that was a long time ago...

I used to live in Ridgecrest. Other corner of the country now, though!

Oh, there was high school then?

Oh, there was high school then?

You betcha'. And it wasn't some watered down wimpy version like today.

Three of the finest instructors I ever had at any level (physics, chemistry, and biology) were at that high school. I can still quote from their lessons today. I also studied a year of Latin as a public high school foreign language requirement. My senior English Literature instructor was similarly outstanding, and we covered a wonderful cross-section of that literary canon. Every teacher I encountered at that school back then was well above average.

Sadly, when many years later I had occasion to discover the now current state of high school educations, I was appalled. One could possibly make a compelling case that at least some of the chronic difficulties being suffered by society today have their roots in this decline.

Both sides of Pioneer Blvd are the same, Excelsior High is still there but not used as a high school anymore, I think Adult education.

Hi Chris,

Do you live in Eastern San Diego County? I live in Alpine and would be interested in some local trips.

Best,

John

John Cooley, yes I am East County. I am going to do a small get together soon. I do a lot of day trips out Hwy. 80 too.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, there is a follow up thread now over in the member organized meetings topic as a San Diego APUG meeting. Chris

Gorgeous image Richard. The mottled light works wonderfully with the various tones and textures. Well seen and executed. I've got to visit Death Valley with my Hasselblad before I get too old.

Thanks. A lot of luck (I'll take a little credit for the "preparedness meeting opportunity" part however.... as the light and time of day was fortuitously perfect.

And this was all handheld on the fly as the family was with me. I stuffed my old trusty LowePro Orion AW with my Rolleiwide, Tele-Rolleiflex and a "normal" 3.5E3 Xenotar and pulled them out as needed (normal in the middle, wide to the left, Tele in the right....hehe). Hope to get back one day where I can slow down, use the tripod and take my time.

(And apologies: this is NOT a scan of a print but a scan of a neg. But it was film, I promise. Sorry I'm not a "true" APUGer.... :-( )
