Does anyone know of a source for inexpensive neutral density filters in approximately 3X6" size? These would be used for attenuating the exposing light, not in an optical system in front of the lens, so they would not need to be of the highest optical quality.

Sandy,

I just bought a sheet of .90 ND material at the camera store here in Phoenix. Lee was the mfg of this stuff but I think that Rosco makes it too. Cost was about $7.00 for a 20X24 sheet.
