Source for 1/4" screw for camera/tripod attachment

Hey Everyone-

Does anyone have a good source for buying a 1/4" camera screw for attaching my 11x14 to a tripod. I lost the one I had and thought about making my own, but a normal 1/4" bolt is to thick to move along the slot on my tripod head. It would only fit through the center hole and not be able to slide forward or backwards. I need to be able to move the screw to better balance this camera because of it's weight and shifting front and rear standards. Any suggestions welcomed.

Try a 1/4" allen head cap screw. Smaller head, rounded, might be what you need. Just throwin it out there.

Its a standard 1/4x20 thread. You can buy screws at any well-equipped hardware store with various choices of heads - thumbscrews all the way up to screws with molded plastic knobs in place of heads.

I lost the screw for a Gitzo tripod I have. The slot is threaded at one end so you can put in the screw. I filed down the thread about a quarter inch from the end so that after installing, the screw will slide along the slot, yet will not fall out. I use a wing nut to clamp the camera to the tripod.

Either file down the 1/4-20 bolt or buy one of the "special" tripod types. Check KEH to see if they have anything used (and cheap). Many old Bogen video tripod heads used a 1/4-20 screw with a big thumbwheel on the end to tighten it into the camera. so that might help you along.

Also try ebay to see what people are getting rid of.

if it's a currently manufactured tripod, I suggest contacting a dealer, otherwise I or a anyone else with a metalworking lathe or your friendly neighborhood machine shop can modify a stock machine screw for you pretty easily.

If you can find a 1/4 in. 20 screw with a knob on it, just chuck it up in a drill with the width of a file from the knob. Turn on the drill and with the narrow flat side file the threads off down to the main body, un chuck and you have a screw and a knob that will slide along in the T pod head. Most Tri pod heads have one end of the slot threaded so the screw can be put in. If yours dosn't, find some one with a 1/4 inch tap and and thread the end of the slot. Usually when one gets lost it is because it unscrewed itself from the head.
