    sorry to be blunt
its been said over and over and over again
but pretty much 99% of photography is dead
and pretty much everyone who makes photographs,
unless they are some gallery or museum's darling
or have deep pockets or deep connections stuff
is wasting their time and effort because no one really cares ...
and if someone really cares will they do more than pat you on the back?
put up the $$ some people might say, and not just a few bucks, $$ for the time
and effort i put into making the photograph... (meh ! )

    does that matter?
what do you do, just stop? or keep doing your thing even though
its gonna be in the dumpster ...

i keep doing it, its one of those things .. i figure ill do for as long as i can ...

When I made my photographs I didn't have the intention to please anyone, showing them to anyone, so?
In fact the kind of photographs I made with the intention to show them to others they do care for the photographs intention for example I often take pictures of nameplates to send to vendors for identifying parts, taking pictures to sell stuff on Ebay and the people who view them do care.

I like it (wife does too) and that's all that matters! Oh, and its a social thing when regional people get together...coffee, food, shoot, talk, etc. Oh, speaking of that John, lets all meet up again at Olga's cafe sometime!

I take it you just got your monthly statement from your printing service and sales were not as expected?

Mine actually not at the dumpster but at the walls and not just in our house.
If OP photography is good for dumpster only, kudos to OP to admit it. Keep on trying, it took me some time to have my pictures accepted.

Some people do crossword puzzles for enjoyment, and they do not care what others think about their outcome.

I belong to the second group, If I happen to make some photos that really please or impresses someone, that is great. But I do not engage in photography specifically to impress or please others, in order to stroke my own ego by getting praise.

Probably the same complaint was made by photographic people 100 years ago "99% of photography is dead" when photography was about 50 years old, (Steichen and Stieglitz perhaps?). Now it is 150 years old and still going strong.
Perhaps the OP statement reflects a dislike for much of current photography? Like and dislike are individual and everyone is entitled to their opinion. However I contest the claim that photography is dead, the quantity of photographs has increased, the quality varies a lot, much dross, some beauty, perhaps a little inspiration here and there? It was always that way. But dead? No.

My kids’ Karate sensai always asks the students if they like him. Regardless of the answer, he then asks if they think he cares. He next says he doesn’t care at all whether they like him or not, because it doesn’t affect what he thinks of himself. Any kid who has had at least three of his classes knows the routine.

It’s a lesson in self-confidence. His lesson would do well for photographers, or any other adult for that matter.

Jnanian, you are one of the only photographers I respect on this site. 99% of the photographers out there (all over the internet) are worthless. That’s what’s killing photography. You are the 1% that can make a photograph that is worth a damn. Every time I go online, all I see are copies of copies of copies. Wether it’s people chasing the latest fad on Instagram or (even worse), people making poor attempts to copy past masters. Ansel Adams’ photos were great. But trying to make photos that looked just like his doesn’t make you great. It makes you irrelevant. Your photos are unique and compelling. You have inspired me many times.

Every time I come to this site, Instagram, or so many other photography relates pages on the net and look at the photos other people post, I think “wow! I’m actually a really good photographer!” Then I look at the photos on largeformatphotograph.info or go to a museum or nice gallery and think “nope. I’ve still got a long way to go.” The saddest thing is that most of the people on these photography sites have no idea how bad of a photographer they even are or what a good photograph even looks like. They complain about guys like Alec Soth and Andreas Gursky because they don’t copy Edward Weston. All they know is the technical side. All they care about is the gear and the settings. Sharpness is their church and the zone system is their religion. They are oblivious to context and meaning. Uniqueness is repulsive to them.

You might consider a change of scenery. Find a place with a thriving artistic community. Find others who can push, encourage, and inspire you. Find a crowd that appreciates your unique vision. Find a place where people get you and your work. You’re really talented. You can’t give up now! You just need a better support system.

It not what people say; its all about how you react to it...
This could possibly be the one of the most interesting times in photography

I do not care what others think of my photographs, those that have seen them like them. I only please myself.

    Garden Party
    Ricky Nelson
Went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
People came from miles around, everyone was there
Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air
And over in the corner, much to my surprise
Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
Played them all the old songs, thought that's why they came
No one heard the music, we didn't look the same
I said hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me
When I sang a song about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode
Playing guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should
If you gotta play at garden parties, I wish you a lotta luck
But if memories were all I sang, I rather drive a truck
And it's all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself
