Hello, I have just started using my Nikon Coolscan 9000 with Vuescan, though I'm unused to the software and I'm wondering if there's any book or online guide for Vuescan that could be recommended?
I also would like to hear advice on which software is the best to use overall, Nikon Scan, Vuescan or Silverfast.

I've used Nikonscan since first getting my Coolscans when first released and tens of thousands of perfectly good scans later from every type of film I could use I can't say anything else is better. I tried Vuescan (many years and versions ago) and here's how a neutral Nikonscan renders Kodak 160VC compared to Vuescan with a Kodak 160VC profile and it's various modifiers . . .

Nikonscan + Coolscan ICE is proprietary and differes from Vuescans version . . .

Nikonscan + Coolscan 9000 ICE is even better then Coolscan 5000 ICE . . .

One of Nikonscan's biggest deficit is color management. It may be more important then I know. Early on, I - and a bunch of other users, got together and scanned the Kodak Ektachrome target and we compiled these results from it. I would say perfectly good for a non-color managed scan from the Coolscan 5000 compared to the others with.

On a side note I gave my son-in-law my Coolscan V and since he is running a current computer he is using Vuescan and so far he doesn't seem to have encountered any unacceptable results.
