Due to its static nature images on still fill need less grainy, higher resolution film than in cinematography. That is why the Leica was not commercialized with cine- but with (aerial) still-film.

I really like it alot and have 1200 feet on hand right now. I have used it interchangeably with Tri-X for many years at ISO 250. Recent results I have seen on the Rangefinder tempt me to try it up to ISO 1600.

Yea theres a great thread many many pages long on rff. Popularity sure spiked on this film. When i first got it i was giving rolls away to friends to try it but there wasnt that much interest in my circle. I think with the price increase this film is nowhere the deal that it was. Id rather get arista premium thats prerolled which comes out cheaper. XX compared to tri-x 100ft rolls might seem like you are getting a deal but tri-x was also jacked up considerably. Arista premium from freestyle is still the best deal hands down until they run out.

Well, I understand the price factor. Spooling by some commercial entity will cost. Not only handling (labour, storage, marketing etc.) but also cassette and label add to it. As for today it only makes sens to buy bulk film. In such a way I pay $3 per full (36 exp.) roll, so it is 2.2 Euro. Of course the thing with DXN is, it is confine to 35mm format, in MF I love TX and TMY.
The question about D76 was rhetorical one. How do you like Ultrafin T+ ?
In the UK a 400 foot can of 5222 is only a little bit dearer than a100 foot of bulk Trix. That makes it attractive.

from where Xmas?

The last time i investigated (early autumn this year) , a 400' roll of 5222 from Kodak was around £180-£200
I can't imagine that a 100' roll of Tri-X can be any more than £70-£80.
And I can pick up HP5 100' for ~£50

If I can get 5222 that cheap (per-foot I mean) in the UK I'll jump on a roll immediately

If you are interested in shooting b&w cine stock you might also consider the ORWO films.

for info, in the UK Orwo N74 is around £200/400' and UN54 about £150/400' - though these prices were quoted to me in July 2013 and have probably risen somewhat since

Price of 5222 is almost the same everywhere, your 124 pounds is 218 Canadian $. My price here is $213 for 5222 400' and right now $104 for TX 100' . But the price of TX at Silverprint is hilarious, equivalent to $195 Canadian. With this prices Kodak will be VERY quickly out of any film production. It's time to switch totally to Ilford.

Concerning the "short end", is that possible to get something shorter than 100 feet, so I could put it in a regular loader?

Check with the hortend dealers, they may be willing to save you some.

Movie film at 24 Frames a second and 4 Perfs per frame (the traditional arrangement) goes through the Camera at a leisurely 90 feet a minute. By the time they shoot a a slate to id the shot, that does not give much of a run on a 100 ft roll. so typically any end of under 100 ft is thrown away.

Now it is posible that a dealer may re-spool a 100+ end from a core onto a Spool. this would take 106 feet (100 ft of shooting plus the leader for subdued light loading) The spools are used in certain cameras that take shots close to the action. In re-spooling that may have a length left over that they would be willing to sell.

With this as a background you can see why sometimes 100-150 ft is slightly cheaper per foot than 200-400 ft ends.

I use an ALDEN 200 bulk loader which will take 200 ft at a time. My method is to use a set of rewinds and a 1000ft Split reel, to wind about 100 ft at a time onto a spool. (I can cheat and over fill the spool slightly and get the whole 400ft roll in about 3 batches.)

Id rather get arista premium thats prerolled Arista premium from freestyle is still the best deal hands down until they run out.

Better hurry. The Freestyle web site only has the 24 exp rolls of arista Premium 400 left. It was a good buy while it lasted, not quite as good a buy as "Legacy Pro" but a good buy non the less.

I miss even more the Arista Premium 100, which is re-branded Kodak 125 Plus-X. Once in a while I take a look at my two bricks in the fridge. Sigh... I know Ultrafine On Line still sells Plus-X but the shipping is incredibly high.

I shot through all of my plus-x in 120 last summer, and i have about 60 sheets left in 4x5. Great film. The 4x5 i have is going a bit requiring me to shoot at an ei of 64/50. But yea the arista premium days are just about over.

Not exactly. Arista is a store brand of Freestyle. Kodak is no longer selling them film for rebranding so the Premium line of rebranded Kodak is almost gone. The Arista.EDU.Ultra, which is rebranded Foma, continues as does the Arista Private Reserve paper that is rebranded Adox MCP RC and various other Arista branded products.

yea & silverprint is not the most expensve shop!

But I although don't have a film dark room it is easy to move the 5222 core film to a Fuji/Agfa style 100 foot spool in a changing bag.

The only problem with Double-X is base thickness 33 is safer than 37 in a cassette. It is little slower than Delta 400, (both in Microphen) does not have much more grain, and is lower contrast.

Let me shake your hand. I am not using Microphen but rather HC110 and Tmax dev. in low concentration plus Borax bath to. IMO it is a great way to control the contrast with DXN. Standard time in Borax is 3' but if I need more contrast, a bit longer, up to 4'.
One day try DXN in Polymax T (20C, 6', Borax 3' ISO 200), very nice sharp grain, visible in 8x10 print, but overall picture is very sharp with good shadows.
