I remember that lawsuit. Ironically the smaller prints were likely better quality dye transfers but whatever, those collectors were pissed about artificial scarcity and Eggleston had no Fs to give.

So I researched it and the collector who sued obviously had no idea of how editioning works. What Eggleston or his representatives did was perfectly legitimate.

The mid-flight cocktail listing is actually a thumbnail for a full portfolio of 101 dye transfer prints, which goes some way to explaining the $2-3M estimate.

If I understand the listing details (I didn't watch the video yet), these images are all dye transfer printers' proofs sourced from the printers, from photos that had extremely limited original editions (of 10 or so). I suppose they might be considered extras or less valuable than the numbered edition prints, but Eggleston is iconic like-him-or-not, there are only so many dye transfer Eggleston prints in the world, and I imagine there aren't going to be any more.

Anecdotally a friend of a friend traveled to Paris some years ago and bought some photos from a local antiquities only to discover thay were original Atgets! Came back home around 30k richer

When we were in LA last, I made a point of seeing the Dye Transfer from Eggleston in a gallery. There were about 50+ of them, about 16x20?

After looking at all of them, I looked at my wife and said, which one is your favorite, and she promptly picked out the only one worth anything.

I will take any Avedon any day ;-)

Stunning. Thanks for sharing.

His exhibition in Berlin a couple of years ago was an unforgettable experience. I bought the accompanying book (printed by Steidl) on the spot, too, but it really, really doesn't make the prints justice.

One of the most incredible American artists of the last 249 years.
