Here’s one that’s a little tough to let go…but I am determined to consolidate my camera “collection” (I am NOT a collector!) and pare things down a bit.
The Plaubel Makina cameras are the stuff of legend, and rightly so. There is also a lot of misinformation surrounding these cameras, so let’s clear up a few things. 1. They are not nearly as fragile as people seem to think. Yes, they have bellows, so you need to be aware of that when handling the camera. After your first roll, you will have figured the handling part out. Nice thing about the W67 is that the bellows are much shorter than the regular 67/670 model. 2. The film advance is also not “fragile”. Simply wind the film to the next frame in a smooth motion, all the way to the end of the stroke. Not hard. Remember that you are moving a lot of film with each advance, and just be smooth. 3. You should remember to set the focus to infinity before closing the bellows. That will help keep the focusing mechanism properly aligned and also help keep the meter’s electrical wires in good shape. On this camera, the meter works great. 4. The rangefinder spot is often described as “hard to see”. Not on this camera. It is bright and easy to focus. Yup, it’s not a Leica, but what else is, really?
Ok, on to the particulars - it’s in very good cosmetic shape, with minor signs of use, no cracks or dings anywhere. The viewfinder is clear and the rangefinder spot is easy to see. It is also accurate. The focusing knob is smooth. The shutter release is without issues. The meter works and is very accurate. The film advance works great with very even frame spacing. The light seals are in good shape (light tight), and I have an extra set that I will include with the camera. The bellows are light tight and in great shape.
The Nikkor lens is clear - no haze or fungus. There may be some dust (it would surprise me if there wasn’t any), but if it is there, it has zero effect on the photos. This lens is amazingly sharp. The shutter is accurate at all speeds (based on my exposures on Ektachrome. You really need to see 6x7 transparencies!)
Included is a lens hood modeled on the stupidly expensive Plaubel original, a set of batteries, and the aforementioned extra light seal set.
