S/N: 817552 dates to 1956.

The camera and lens were just CLA'd by Youxin Ye:

Leica M3 #817552
Note: CLA’d, cleaned and lubricated mechanical parts, adjusted shutter speeds and brake, shutter works well at all speeds now. Recovered the camera body. The rangefinder prism fell off, recemented into place. Cleaned finder and adjusted focus. The finder is clean and clear now. Tested the camera with a blank roll film made sure film winding and rewinding are all good.

Summicron 50/2.0 #1253577
Note: CLA’d, cleaned and lubricated focus helical, cleaned and lubricated aperture ring. Cleaned optics removed haze inside. The lens front element surface has some cleaning marks from past usage. Else clean and clear consider the age of the lens. Tested the lens with digital M body, lens is in focus, contrast is still acceptable.

No telling when the last CLA was done. Ken Rockwell (kenrockwell.com/leica/m3.htm) suggests a CLA every 10 years, so you're good to go for the next decade!

The Leicameter M was produced from 1954 through 1965. This first meter dedicated to the LEICA M series uses a flip-up door in front of its selenium cell to activate its low range. This meter generates its own electricity, and never needs any batteries. There is also low-light booster available. Its shutter speeds read in the scientific scale (1 - 2 - 5 - 10 - 25 - 50 - 100 - 250 - 500 - 1000), correlating with the first LEICA M3s. Regardless of its scale numbers, it works perfectly with all of the six LEICA models on which it fits. The meter is functional, but it has not been calibrated. Personally, I'd go with a modern light meter, but it's nice to have a part of the set. I'll even include a Minolta Flash Meter III, a good entry-level digital meter.

Extras include an Elmar 9cm (M39) and hood, an M39-L/M adapter, a variable viewfinder (very dark; needs cleaning), all in a Leica-branded accessory case.

Asking $1,800, plus S/H.

This was sold last summer, but because the buyer tried to scam me via complaints with both eBay and PayPal, it was returned to me and the scammers lost their money!

So back on the market!

Good grief. Just got a fully CLA'd Rolleiflex 2.8c back with extras and here you are making me consider getting rid of it. STOP it! Lol. Great looking M3. Best of luck!

This is a wonderful camera. I had a slightly later example (serial 899xxx), but mine had the newer sequence of shutter speeds. I had it converted to single stroke by Leitz in New Jersey when they still offered this service. Mine was a clunker that had once suffered fungus, but I still used it for 25 years. M3 has the most sophisticated optical viewfinder ever.

Great deal for this with the lens included. Especially with the recent CLA. The M3 is an absolute joy.

I put my Leica M240 on Ebay and was continually getting false bids from scammers. Typical bid was by e-mail and not the "buy" button on the Ebay site. The e-mail typically added, "please contact me @______, I have some questions". I responded to each one by telling them if they wanted to buy, hit the buy button on Ebay. I never had a further response to any of them. I did sell it by the way. So, warning: Do not respond to emails making so called offers and asking for an e-mail response. The are phishing.

Does not eBay purge messages that contain personal contact information such as email addresses? How did these scammers' messages get through to you?

A lot of them get around it by saying something like, “please message me back at JohnSmith at g mail” or something. Happens a lot. eBay looks for phone numbers and email addresses in normal format. “Reach me at 3 oh five . Five five five . 1 two three 4.” Isn’t easily detected by a bot.

I got hit with a scam by some mainland Chinese. Several folks shared an eBay account (yes, that's allowed), but the person who paid for it was not the eBay account owner. I was able to track it to Chinese customs, but the eBay account owner filed a claim saying it had never arrived. eBay ruled against him, as they could see it was at least in country and far out of my responsibility. Then the guy who paid for it filed a claim via Paypal, also saying it had not arrived. With that set-up, they had TWO chances to get their money back versus one.

I sent the eBay ruling to Paypal, and noted that this was a double effort to scam me. Paypal agreed.

Surprisingly, the camera was returned to me! Never passed through Chinese customs. I guess it was because of the pandemic and they were being extra careful about what passed into the country.

Never heard from the eBay account owner or the person who paid for it. Probably professional scammers, so they take the occasional loss at the cost of doing business.

So, be especially cautious of out-of-country buyers, and if the person who pays isn't the person who owns the eBay account, play it safe and cancel the sale.
