Glad you made Haleakala, David. It is quite spectacular for sunrise, although you have to leave at 3am or so to make it (traffic, believe it or not - going to the summit).

We were trying for sunset, actually, since it was full moon, and we could catch the moonrise as well, but we were trumped in the end by the tropical storm that grazed the island that night. I think I got a few good ones along the Hana road today, though.

At one overlook a young guy asks me, "Is that one of those cameras that takes the big film?" Hey, score one for the locals! His photography teacher in high school shot 4x5", and he said he wanted to set up a darkroom again when he had his own place.

That is an event to watch out for; I mark it on my calendar as well. For this particular image in the gallery: (there was a url link here which no longer exists). During the winter months, the moon rises between the two islands you see in this image. Last year, I tried for 4 months in a row, but only got one or two images (because of bad weather) - nothing really worth printing. I'll try again this winter.

That's the advantage of shooting what's in the backyard--you can plan, compose, and recompose. Eventually we'll set things up so we can spend more time out here. Maui is nice, but I think we still prefer Moloka'i as a long-term proposition. We're off to Honolulu tomorrow, and we'll give you a call in a couple days, Robert.
