Speaking of privacy issues, I'm always amazed at the number of seemingly paranoid members of the Forum that won't even put the State (or even country) they live in in their profile.

I think /assume that most people who fail to fill this vital profile information do so not out of concern for privacy but out of laziness or ignorance.

This makes me thing of a disco in Brasil I think it was where it is chick to get a chip inplant where your drinks and visits are registered. I am afraid this is all just the beginning. How this all can be used even better and exploited is still coming. Maybe I am a dinosaur or out of touch but I thing we are going to start to lose our human side, or maybe this is showing how we really are.

Andreas, you are not out of touch. 1984, or Brazil, are slowly but surely becoming reality in a few places. I fear that the world will forgo privacy, and liberty, for quite some time. I just hope a future generation will want to get it back.

All the white pages (residential) are now online only. All we get are yellow pages now. Must be great for older folks who don't have a computer or other gadgets or know how to use one.

Hmmm, odd. We still get a regular phone book up here....

My landline's Verizon.

We disconnected our copper land line at the beginning of the year. Of the monthly charge, 95% was line rental.

Now we have a VOIP phone, which is a fraction of the price (actually nothing, because its bundled in with our internet).

The funny thing is the other day, the telco dropped a phone book on my door step. I picked it up and placed it straight into the recycling bin...

Don't you need to look up anyone else's number? Not having a landline phone yourself doesn't mean you don't need the book.

Its funny, but you would think that.
But All listed numbers can be found on the internet.
I actually cannot remember the last time I actually picked up a phone book, either white or yellow. If I want to look something up, I'll just connect to the net and get the info.

Haven't had a land line in Utah for about 15 years. Haven't bothered with a phone book of any kind for about 5. At my place in the Dakotas it is different, most businesses don't have much of an Internet presence, and cell coverage at the farm house is both marginal and intermittent, so I have and use both.

I teach social research methods and we talk about the difficulty for researchers now that people are disconnecting landlines. How to get a balanced phone survey when large sections (it used to be just the 'young' and 'poor')have no land line?

I have a friend who used to be a printer at a large pro photo outfit and he'd always bring home prints of weirdos, glamour shoots, etc. He had a wall full of them.
